Perfume Review: Annick Goutal Musc Nomade

By Tom

If you have read my blog or the past posts here on PST you will have more than covered the Agatha Christie-esque twists and turns that have brought this new scent to me. (all kudos to the ladies at the Perfumed Court for making up for the vicissitudes of the local Post Office- you ladies rock)

Musc Nomade is the fourth scent in the new line of Goutals, called "Les Orientalists". The first three of which I liked immensely; I was unsure how I would find this one. The name suggest something wild, like Muscs Kublai Khan; the nose is Isabelle Doyen, responsible for Lez Nez' l'Antimatiere, a perfume so etherial some cannot discern it.

Upon finally smelling Musc Nomade, I am struck that it is kind of sister of Etat Libre d'Orange's Tom of Finland scent. Sisters in a film-noir sense, like one where Bette Davis takes over the other one's life then has problems remembering where the bathrooms are. All that's deliberately, winkingly cheap about Tom of Finland is done here with a ruthlessly easy chic. Etat Libre's scent is all leather jackets, doublemint gum and the smell of the piers. It's New York in 1977. Musc Nomade is all about tanned, clean youthful skin, an expensive linen shift tossed on after an ocean dip, an evening on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean that same year, wood, roses and your own fabulousness. Do I need to tell you which sister I want to be?

Musc Nomade just might be getting to the US sometime in the Fall if the SA's are correct. In the mean time it can be ordered from the ever-delightful Lianne Tio from her boutique in the Netherlands. Since shipping covers I believe about four bottles, I suggest a bunch of you get together and do so in bulk.

I really wish I could smell Musc Nomade. My husband smelled the sample on me and gave it a very rare fragrance compliment, but all I can detect is the barest whisper of something that smells like potting soil for a few seconds, and then nothing at all. It sounds lovely.

That linen shift clings to damp skin in all the right places, Tommo... ;-)

  3. Sob! You can smell it! I'm w/ Amy - simply can't smell it. It was as if there was pure spring water in my sample vial. Of course the sample was fine, but whatever musk they used, I'm anosmic to. :-(

  4. I guess I better see if I can smell this before I buy it--sounds as if it might be a gender thing. And I admit to a sneaky weakness for doublemint and the docks.:)

  5. I can smell it all right (otherwise I wouldn't have reviewed it) but that's precisely what makes reviewing musk scents difficult: we almost all have some form of selective anosmia to it.
I road-tested it yesterday, alongside Muscs Koublaï Khan, to see if I would purchase my third full bottle of MKK or go with the Goutal. The MKK definitely has more body and a distinct tinge of chocolate. The Goutal ends up wispy and powdery with a salty tinge. It's lovely indeed, a very Parisian, tame beast next to the big cat that is MKK. I could actually see myself going for both of them, budget allowing.

  6. Well, at least I'm not the only one who cannot smell it! And I love other musks!

I'm on the can't-smell bench. I spritzed at Aedes & thought maybe it was one of those whaddyacallem bottles, just for show, with water inside. Nothing, nada, zip. Same thing happened when I tried l'Antimatiere, come to think of it. Ah well, for those who can, enjoy your ocean dip & evening on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. I shall be jealous over here with my decant of Ambre Fetiche, the only one of the four that I liked (actually ... LOVE).

Congrats on finally getting some MN to your door! I know it has been quite a labyrinthian journey.

I totally had you pegged for a pier regular rather than a Meditteranean jet setter.

    I kid.

  9. Augh, you're killing me! It sounds so perfect ... I need to order up a sample. OTOH what Amy said scares me; I definitely have some musk anosmia, and maybe I won't be able to smell it!

Ruh roh -- read down further and my FT Elle says she can't smell it... :-( oh, well, guess I will find something else to throw money away on.

I am seeing that a lot of people can't smell it at all, which is a pity.

Definitely worth a bottle, and I have MKK as well.

Where did you review it? I don't see it on your site (which I am going to have to catch up on)

Nope, there are a lot of people who can't.

I don't remember, were you able to smell l'Antimatiere? I think it might be the same musk in it..

  20. Marina! Nooo!

That's too bad, but then again you have such nice alternatives at your fingertips.

Yes, I could swear Aedes is where I sniffed this, tho it's not yet on their web site. Now you have me doubting myself ... I'll have to take a stroll past to confirm ...

  22. Lianne is a lovely, knowledgeable woman and it is truly a delight to visit her shop! But how did you discover her, Tom? I am shocked!

    go and report back!

I discovered her when I was hunting for the last drops of Eau de Fier. I am happy that she has her own place now (as well as still being the very able rep for AG) and one day would love to visit her- she's the best!

  25. I was only "sorta" looking forward to this one -- now I want it!

  26. Robin-

Try it first! Looks like quite a few can't smell it. but I really liked it; it's not really nights of sheherezade, it's more notte di cabiria

  27. Nope :-) Antimatiere might as well have been a factice, like Divalano got. I do hear musk anosmia has a strong gender component for different musks, which I find very interesting. I guess it makes sense in terms of sexual attractant...

I guess this is another job for Gay Best Friend (imagine rainbow cape)! He can tell you when you're smelling fabulous, even if you can't make it out..

  29. Tom, if you ever do come over here for a visit then you must promise to visit me too! :) *hugs*

  30. Tom, my review is in the May 2008 summary of Grain de Musc: http://graindemusc.blogspot.com/2008/05/filling-musk-gap-ii-annick-goutal-musc.html

It's actually one of the reviews that's most googled, in French.
