Perfume Review: Caron N'Aimez Que Moi

Created in the beginning of World War I, N'Aimez Que Moi was meant to be an oath of faithfulness, of willingness to wait, to love only Him, and a manifestation of hope that He, despite the distances between, will love only Her. Times changed, we became that much more sophisticated or, rather, cynical. We wouldn't dare to pronounce, Love Only Me, in fear of being seen for what we really are, vulnerable and unsure. And yet, in the heart of hearts, we, the urbane, proud, nonchalant and afraid of absolute commitment, all carry that simple and poignant desire to be loved forever and ever above all others and to love just as much in return. To get through tough times of separation and anxiety and to live ever after the uncomplicated life of happiness.

The simple blend of N'Aimez Que Moi is as old-fashioned and as forever modern and meaningful as the feeling it was supposed to commemorate. The sweetness of rose is enhanced by a touch of vanilla. The orris accord adds to the composition the endearingly retro powdery feel that I adore. The very subtle lilac note freshens the candied blend and makes it that much more fragile, that much more melancholic. The satisfyingly solid, warm base of sandlawood and amber is a promise of happy end, an assurance that, as Bulgakov's Woland said, in the end "everything will turn out right, the world is built on that."

Available at Caron Boutiques.

  1. Oh, how I adore Woland! Now I'm inspired to retry this scent. I do believe in happy endings - so I trust that the time *will* come when I sample this scent and fall madly in love w/ it.

  3. L,
I've had very few happy endings, with Caron scents. I don't know if it's the right time for it or what, but I just clicked with N'Aimez this time.

I've been trying, and failing, with Caron and was just about to throw in the dip stick for good. But you've inspired me to try N'Aimez Que Moi, Marina, and I shall high tail it over to see Diane when the clock strikes 10 tomorrow morning!

I hope to hear how it goes. And I hope you do like it. Or some other Caron.

  9. Well, you know that I love this one, even if I would personally never wear it.. I was crushed to read that Gaia went to the source and reported that some have been watered down.

  10. I had the chance to try this a while ago - it was truly lovely, and as you said, quite simple, but so charming. It has that vintage Caron signature for sure. Of course I loved it as I am a real classics fan, especially Carons. I don't think it's "me" the way, say Narcisse Noir or Parfum Sacre are, but I can appreciate it just the same. Thank for reviewing this little-known jewel of a scent!

Welcome back! We missed you. I was impressed by some Caron's - Parfum Sacre, and Coup de Fouet. I really wanted to like N'Aimez Que Moi. It smells very similar to Lorenzo Villoresi's Donna to me, and I’m kind of disappointed to say this, but Donna wins. It’s like spicy woods soaked in citrus-floral essences, whereas N’Aimez Que Moi has a bit too much of the faded pot pourri about it:( I guess this is the aspect that puts some people off Caron in general? I don't know whether it's the sandalwood - it ruins Narcisse Noir for me. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

  16. Hooray for N'Aimez Que Moi! I bought my first bottle of this nearly two years ago, the day after quitting the worst job I've ever had. So to me, it smells of hope and new beginnings. It's my holiest of Holy Grails.

For the record, I have tried the newer batches I have not noticed ANY watering-down of the formula. NONE. And since I've worn this fragrance at least once a week for nearly two years, I would know.

  17. I tried it on paper, but never on skin, and sadly can't even remember it. Just wanted to say welcome back!

  18. It seems to be a longing request... couched in a demand. It's what any good feminist heroine would wear. Brave and hopeful.

  19. Tom,
I have a sample of vintage and of a new one. The new one is somewhat more subtle but I would not call it watered down.

Thank you! You know, I found Donna to be much, much stronger than N'Aimez.

  28. Marina, do I love Caron Tubereuse? Oh my YES! I adore it, it's the best tuberose scent I know of outside of Carnal FLower! It is quieter and more refined than some but oh so divine, and I hope to actually own it someday. (Okay, the tuberose in the exclusive "Private Collection" I wrote about before might be the best of all, but I would hate to have to choose among them.)

Hm, I've gone back to this, and it IS much ligher and gentler than I'd remembered - it's rather lovely! Perhaps I'd had a hard day when I wrote it off as pot pourri, or maybe my skin chemistry is different today?! Thanks for making me reconsider :)
