Wednesday Blues

February doldrums and a blogger's block just wouldn't let me write a proper review today. In an attempt to cheer up myself and to perhaps jump-start the part of my brain (such as it is) that is responsible for my creativity (such as that is), I decided to compile yet another wish list. The following are the random scents I discovered and realized I urgently needed by idly browsing online perfume stores.

Parfum1 is selling Yves Rocher Ispahan, $39.95 for 2.5oz. Seeing it there brought back the memories of being in my last year of high school and crazy in love...As far as I remember it, Ispahan smelled very dark, very rich, a dangerous, wicked potion. I am very tempted to buy it.

Cambridge Chemists offer Czech and Speake Oxford & Cambridge, $100.00 for 100ml. The scent has been on my To-Try list for ages, and although I suspect it might be too sharp for my taste, I am itching to buy it unsniffed. I miss Oxford...And I have this silly idea that wearing Oxford & Cambridge would miraculously help me achieve the posh, plummy English accent I always wanted. Wishful thinking. If living in the UK for five years haven't done it, no lavender perfume ever would. I am forever stuck with what Mr. Colombina calls "a cute Russian accent" (yeah, whatever). Still, mustn't grumble.

B-glowing offers an intriguing new tuberose fraghrance, Voluspa Tuberosa Agave, $24.00 for 16.5ml. With notes of Mexican tuberose, blue orris, coconut milk, musk and vetiver, it sounds jolly good (I can at least pretend I speak with a posh English accent, can't I?) and makes me think that it might be slightly reminiscent of Tubereuse Couture and Noix de Tubereuse, both of which I love.

Your Cosmetics now has in stock some new Esteban scents. I was underwhelmed by Sensuelle Russie, a.k.a Ambre Narguile Lite, but I am curious about Douceur Balinaise (bergamot, cardamom, nutmeg, musk, jasmine, ylang ylang, lotus flowers, iris, sandalwood). It sounds like it might turn out to be the kind of spicy floral that I like, it is cheap ($38.00 for 100ml!), and the packaging is super-cute...Being bored and feeling blue is dangerous for one's wallet.

Also at Your Cosmetics is Antica Farmacista's Tuberose, Hyacinth and Lily of the Valley, a scent I meant to try for a while now. I've been wearing their Casablanca every day for the last month, and, as a newborn White Floral Lover, I have my hopes high for this luscious-sounding bouquet. $58.00 for 50ml.

Luckyscent got new Profumums, and Dulcis, which they describe as "dessert at its irresistible best: whipped cream being licked off fingers, fits of giggles fueled by liqueur, suggestive whispers over shared spoonfuls", sounds lovely if rather overpriced and possibly reminiscent of my beloved Psychedelic by Rich Hippie. Having said that, on this bleak Wednesday morning I feel that $195.00 might not be too high a price to pay for a fit of giggles.

Neiman Marcus is fueling my wonderlast by telling stories about a sailing adventure that inspired Creed's new scent, Virgin Island Water. With notes of essence of copra, lime, white bergamot, mandarin orange, hibiscus, ginger, ylang-ylang, jasmine, sugar cane, white rum and musk, it sounds ...like something I'd love to drink as well as to spritz. "Take me away, carriage, carry me off, frigate!" $185.00-$285.00.

And some more hibiscus on my wish list (I blame Chanel No 18!) is courtesy of Strange Invisible Perfumes Galatea at Barney's. I grew up reading Greek myths and you can sell me almost anything if you give it a mythological name ...and add some hibiscus.

What's on your wish list, this gloomy Wednesday?

  1. I think my problem is that my wish list is constantly getting longer and longer...so, I buy something just to shorten it a little.

OK, my current (this week and I reserve the right to change this at any moment) Parfumerie Generale's Bois Blond and L'ombre Fauve. I am craving these!

  2. I have a short wish list this week: mostly that I can get rid of this freaking flu (fever, chills and strangely, weight gain) so that my scents can smell normal. Oddly, with a head full of mucus and a fever, the Human Existence I decanted for Patty seems quite wearable, while Chene seems oddly burnt.

If I hadn't sent in a review earlier of SKY, there might have been nothing from me this week, which is of course a panic to you all.

Kelley, I've gotten decanting stuff from Patty, any last minute addtions?

  3. BTW- I would have sworn that the Garbo was by Covarrubias, who did all those illustrations for Vanity Fair in the twenties. The illustration is fabulous- I need to google and see more!

Oh, Colombina, Ispahan was my very very first parfume and the only thing I can remember : lots of cinnamon (it was sooo long ago, sigh...).

It's been raining a lot here. I guess that's gloomy. My current wish list is as follows:
    Andy Tauer Maroc pour Elle
    Nuit de Noel extrait
    Mona di Orio Nuit Noire
Serge Lutens Chene (I'll take a decant)
Then there are the many, many samples I want.

Does Ispahan have rose in it? It should. There's a fragrant rose called 'Isphahan.'

  7. PG is dominating my wishlist right now. I have a big lemming for Psychotrope, thanks to you, and I really want to try the new ones--Bois Blond and L'Ombre Fauve.

I also keep thinking of bottles of Fleur de Narcisse and Rose Poivree, but since I have some of those scents, I am holding off.

  8. I am working very hard at keeping my list of lemmings shorter than the dictionary. Sadly, I just added a few on reading your list. Ispahan (well, different spelling)was one of my father's favorite cities. Can't resist it and the price is right. I keep trying to resist Galatea, but it really is lovely. And Casablanca is calling my name. Will have to shift to saying I want it shorter than an unabridged edition.
Tom - hope you feel better soon!

  9. All the Divines are on my list and Montale White Oud and the three LEs from PG, and I know I'm missing some.

Feel better, Tom! When you get in that bad of shape in the sniffer, it makes you wonder what it would be like to always perceive things that way!

Your wishlists are dangerous Marina! I want about four of the ones you listed. How about you just get one of that wishlist to satisfy the cravings and soothe the doldrums? :-) (Are you still on a nobuy?)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Vika,
I want Bel Respiro too! Do you know, Kenzo Flower has no smell on me...all this years it's been on the market, and still I don't know what it is like, because I seriously can't smell it. I understand one might have "olfactory blindness" for a musk, but the whole scent? Bizarre, no? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Kelley,
Buying something to shorten a wishlist is as good an excuse as any :-)
Those new PGs are on my list too now, especially the Blond one. There is yet to be a perfume Blond(e) that doesn't work for me :-)

  13. Tom,
Please feel better soon! We all love you!

  14. Tom,
The image is from allposters.com. They are not known for super accuracy. You might be right.

  15. Lady Jane,
I just remember spicy darkness...a very atmospheric scent, wasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tina,
I love all entries but one on your list...guess which one I don't love :-D

    ReplyDelete
  17. Maria,
Great list! I am sure Ispahan has rose. I don't remember it as a floral-floral scent, but I bet there was rose there.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Judith,
Those PG people (well, one person :-)) are almost too productive, I can't keep up anymore! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. L,
Ha! Mine is like old Soviet encyclopedia in 30 volumes :-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Patty,
Everyone seems to want those PGs! I'd love to get me some L'Inspiratrice too.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Minsun,
Lead me not into temptation. :-) I have recently broken my no buy, because there was a bottle of Dzing going for a very bargain price :-) Now I am back on no buy track.

  22. It is such a weird day here today - blue sky one minute, cold gusty wind the next then lashing rain. Still it's March tomorrow and although the weather can be just as horrid March has HOPE I feel. I recently made a new wishlist. Right now at the top is Cristalle EDT, Diorling (both for the summer) then Nahema parfum which I cannot believe I have missed all these years. And some PGs. (have discovered today that First in Fragrance ships to the UK! so not such a bad day after all!) and I have some samples coming from Les Senteurs. When they arrive, well, as my brother would say, turned out nice again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Donanicola,
I love samples programs both at FiF and Les Senteurs. What samples did you get? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. My wish list was recently shortened by one when I got Guerlain Nahema parfum. I can't get enough of this honeyed rose. Something in the drydown reminds me of Mitsouko, a staple.

On my second tier wish list are Anne Pliska, Hermes Elixir des Merveilles, Guerlain Sous le Vent, and Serge Lutens Bois Oriental.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Iris,
So you wish list is multi-tiered? Very well organized! :-)

um, M, let me think: you don't like Putain very much do you ;) I also wasn't sure on your opinion as far as Paris is concerned... so you could say it was a bit of a tricky question ;)
and the gloomy Greta is indeed fab.

and, that was me, by the way. was so busy with the 1,500-letter verification that I forgot to sign my name. sorry for that!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tina,
Since I moved to the new blogger, the site started to recognize me as the owner of this whole shebang and stopped demanded I very myself with 1500 letters. What a relief. But I do feel for you!

Yeah, I meant Putain :-) I do like Paris very much, if theoretically.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm getting samples of SL A la Nuit, AG Songes, and Mona di Orio Orio and Nuit Noire. Went on a bit of a white flower rampage. Wish I'd added TDC Jasmine now after the review on the Posse today! And as for Psychotrope....

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ah, great stuff! Love all of these!

  31. Good Morning M! Sorry you're feeling blue. Making a wishlist is a sure-fire way to pull yourself out and what lovely items you picked! I tried Dulcis when I was in LA a few weeks ago and although I didn't think it FBW ($$??), it definitely could inspire a fit of giggles - a very happy, luscious scent. I also know exactly what you mean by blogger's block. I think I get it every day. It changes when I start writing.

I'm going to say something now that will shock you. I don't have a wishlist right now. My only wish is to send samples and decants to friends to scale down my collection! Samples of new fragrances will suffice until I feel my collection is more manageable. I have never, in my 20 years of collecting fragrance, said that. And it will probably change next week! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  32. T,
I am shocked! No wish list? :-) But I am sure that will change soon :-)

Yes, for me too, it is important, to force myself to open a new word doc and start the first sentence. Then the block disappears. But it is hard to do that first step sometimes.

Profumum scents are so expensive, ouch!

  33. I really don't know what my wishlist is. I feel like I need something from Guerlain with their even coming up at BG but what? I also feel like I maybe need a bottle of CF Cashmere for Men but not itching. Right now I'm most excited to try the new PGs, I think. Oh! I know what I want! I want a bottle of old Violette Precieuse. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ina,
Yeah, you and me both (re: old Violette) :-(

    ReplyDelete
  35. Faizanjax,
Oh I love No 88! I got to try Virgin Island Water and liked it very much, although I think it might be a little too coconutty for me in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It is gloomy today, isn't it?

I haven't much of a wishlist to speak of. I might not spend a dime on perfume this year, at the rate I'm going. Wish somebody would give me a bottle of 28 La Pausa though :-)

  37. R,
Here is wishing that someone WILL!

    M

Sometimes wishlists help; other times they don't. I'm grumpy today for my own, house selling reasons. I LOVE MY HOUSE!

On a lighter note, 'carry me off, frigate' sounds like sexy smuttalk in a proper British accent, if you ask me.

So, my wish list - all full bottles:

    Derby
    Chene
    Rousse
    Bois Blond
    Vetiver Tonka
Sel de Vetiver (who's athinking of summer?)
a Mona di Orio (can't make up my mind which one)

Just to cheer myself up, I've just swapped a 2/3 full bell jar of Fumerie Turque (which no longer works for me - I'm not sure why, but I plan to investigate and write about it) for a bottle of Querelle (not yet sniffed, but hey, life is about risks). I kept a decant of FT, for regular sniffage. I will never need a bottle, but I always need a few mls around.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Leopoldo,
I am sorry to hear (but not surprised) how painful it is to sell a house you love :-(

Congrats on Querele though, I hope you love it!

I've been fighting a bad cold too, two days in bed sniffling, only just emerged for Le Parfum de Thérèse...
My wishlist is simple: it's spelled Chanel. Cuir de Russie, Bois des Iles, 31 rue Cambon, Bel Respiro, N°18... And Divine's Divine... And Lipstick Rose... Am on a no-buy too -- it's literally that or eating, so I'm just gritting my teeth and waiting for my birthday in three weeks. Karl, can you hear me?

    ReplyDelete
  41. D,
I am on such a no buy too :-(

    Karl, can you hear us??

  42. My wish list is too long, far too long... But as it is, I haven't run out of any of my samples, so I don't need bottles... yet... So my wishlist is mostly more and more samples of as of yet untried scents.
But from the top of the head, some that I feel I will need bottles of eventually...
    Tauer L'air du desert marocain
    Guerlain Jicky
    Chanel Cuir de Russie
Histoires des Parfums Marquis de Sade
    Caron Tabac Blond
Montale Aoud cuir d'arabie and/or Black aoud
Comme des Garcons Sherbet Rhubarb (my first real perfume crush)
    And oh so many more...
I tried Dulcis in Fundo and it smells like candied orange peel with powdered sugar and vanilla. Very lovely if you go for that gourmandy comfort scent thing. But I DO think you could get a very similar "orange creamsicle" scent for a tenth of the price or less...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh great list! And I kind of suspected as much with Dulcis. Profumums are nice but severely overpriced for what they are.
