Evening at Chez Colombina. Little Miss Colombina and Mr Colombina are emotionally blackmailed bribed into volunteer to test a random selection of perfumes.
Cadjmere by Parfumerie Generale
Little Miss Colombina: It's fruity!
Mr Colombina: Not too strong. It's a bit...fruity. We think it's fruity.
Little Miss C: It's goooorgeous!
Mr C: It's pleasant.
Aoud Damascus by Montale
Little Miss C: I don't like it!
Mr C: We don't like it! Smells cheap.
Orient Extreme by Montale
Mr C: Murder on the Orient Extreme.
Little Miss C: I don't like it!
Mr. C: Give it a second chance, it grows on you...It has some pleasantness on the second whiff, once you get get past the first reaction.
Little Miss C: (gazes out of the window)
Royal Aoud by Montale
Mr C: I'd give it a royal flush. Kind of leather, but cheap, rubbery leather. You'd wear it to stand out in a room of the White Diamonds Convention...but not necessarily stand out in a good way.
Little Miss C: Oh, my wiggly tooth hurts when I wiggle it.
Attar by Montale
Mr C: I kind of like this one.
Little Miss C: It smells like cigarettes.
Mr C: I'd remember this one.
Louve by Serge Lutens
Mr C: Struggling to get a smell...It's kind of weak.
Little Miss C: (sniffs loudly)
Mr C: Not offensive, but...It's OK, nothing special. I could douse myself in it, it's so weak.
White Aoud by Montale
Mr C: I like this one! This is the best one so far. A bit smoky.
Little Miss C: Yeah, like cigarettes.
Mr C: I like this one. It grows on me. A bit oily. In a pleasant way.
Une Fleur de Cassie by Frederic Malle
Mr C: It's interesting. There is a distinctive smell coming through that I recognize but can't place.
Me: Play doh?
Mr C: Yeah...no...Kind of clay? I was thinking kind of like bricks...This is not for everyday, but for a unique event. To wear with a crushed velvet dress. This shouldn't be worn with leather.
Diorama by Christian Dior
Mr C: I like this bottle...looks like a flask.
Little Miss C : (ran out of places to apply perfume, smells her ankle) I can't smell it! How does it smell, papa?
Mr C: I don't know if there was any logic in this selection, but you know that I don't like rosy, and none of them smell rosy today. They all smell kind of unique. This smells very unique. My second favorite, after White Aoud.
Chanel No. 22
Mr C: Industrial size! I'll be honest with you, I probably smelled this before, but not knowingly. I would know No. 5 and No.19, although I wouldn't know which one is which. ...I'd wear this one, although it is a woman's fragrance. I tend to think of scents in terms of music: high and low tones, high and low notes. Flowers are high, musk is low. Incense is in the middle. This smells incensey. It's very nice.
Ginger Musk by Montale
Little Miss C: It smells...how does it smell?
Mr C: Like paint thinner?...I'd say it projects to be consistent. The type of smell that wouldn't change in time and wouldn't differ from person to person...
Little Miss C: My wiggly tooth says, it wants to come out and get a quarter!

Priceless! Give that girl her quarter!
ReplyDeleteJusith,
ReplyDelete:-D I can't wait to give her that quarter. That tooth has been wiggling for what seems like weeks and features prominently in everything she says and does these days:-)
PS And what do YOU think of Cadjmere? Is it goooorgeous or merely pleasant (and HOW fruity, would you say)?
ReplyDeleteJudith,
ReplyDeleteIt is not fruity AT ALL. I mean, AT ALL :-) It is a beautiful woody scent, which reminded me of Wenge and MW Incense (a little bit). It has some sweetness, but not a lot, and it is slightly powdery. A lovely, understated comfort scent.
ARggggh! I kinda wish you hadn't said that!:)
ReplyDeleteJudith,
ReplyDeleteI *think* you would like it, sorry :-)
I think her wiggly tooth should get a buck for the pleasure she's given us all! So very cute!
ReplyDeleteTom,
ReplyDeleteShe is going to pre-school tomorrow, for the first time ever, and I'd give her a million, if I could, if it could make her tiny and all-mine again :-) Tomorrow at 8am I will be a sobbing mess at the steps of her school :-)
I sort of know what you are feeling: my godchild had her 15th birthday! How did that happen? I'm only 26!?!
ReplyDeleteTom,
ReplyDeleteExactly! I'll blink and she'd be at college already...and I'll still be 29. :-P
Wow it looks like Montale and Serge are the flavors of the month (year?) at perfume smellin' !
ReplyDeleteFaizan,
ReplyDeleteMontales were more or less the flavor of the whole summer for me. I am sort of feeling like I am falling out of love with SLs. Tom liked the new Louve though, so it is not over yet between Perfume-Smellin' Thngs and SL :-)
I was laughing out loud at your daughter's comments! She provided the comic relief to your husband's serious reviews. OK, maybe not too serious. I can't wait to try the new PG. And, what about Andy's new incense series? Good lord, I will never be able to save any money at this rate!
ReplyDeleteKelley,
ReplyDeleteMy husband and serious reviews? No, sorry, impossible :-)
Incense series?!
Miss C. is going to be quite the perfumista. She already has great taste. What a love.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mr. C. does pretty well in the sniffing department too.
Much joy to you all.
More reviews from Little Miss C! I will pay for her teeth in exchange! (She is losing them already? Growing up, I had a process called serial extraction, where they pulled all my baby teeth out in a sequence in order to straighten my teeth. I think I only had one tooth fall out on its own, when I was 11. Eventually, the process was discredited and I had to have braces for four years anyway.)
ReplyDeleteHow is wiggly tooth doing today ?
ReplyDeletesuch lovely little reviews! Mr C is getting better, right? I mean, the whole theory about the high notes and the low notes and the incense in the middle sounds quite professional, almost right :-D.
ReplyDeleteLittle C. is *so* cute. I remember how much trouble did my wiggly teeth give me (and my parents). I hated them and wanted them out ASAP. hovewer, some of my friends in the kindergarten loved them and wiggled them while eating spinach soup. it was disgusting beyond believe! yuck. I'm still not a fan of spinach soup, as you can imagine.
good luck to Little C. in the school today! such an important day, I hope you'll take some photos of her with her schoolbag :-).
Thanks to the Colombina family for the early morning smile. Delightful!
ReplyDeleteI hope this lovely post has reawakened your perfume mojo, M. Shame about the SL stuff though, although I was off SL from April to July... (love affair back on again and serious).
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful post. The pictures of Little Miss Colombina and Mr. Colombina are as priceless as their comments about the perfumes. Thank you for a great Monday morning read. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, this did make me smile so! How cute can one be? And I just wanted to say... She *will* be tiny and yours forever :) I don't think parents ever manage to see their babies as grown ups :D
ReplyDeleteI want to give her wiggly tooth some money too!
ReplyDeleteThey are adorable. She is a little beauty, and Mr. C is a hottie. Naturally.
Yes, it's true. One day they go to preschool, and you will blink your eyes and think (like me this morning, first day of school): how on earth can I have an 8th grader?
Veeery impressed that Mr. C can smell incense in 22.
Mental Note: Must try Cadjmere. Anything you compare to MW and Wenge is yum.
PS price goes up with molars.
PPS Nestled among her perfumes, the Tooth Fairy has two little ring boxes with all baby teeth of two kids. (Except one or two they accidentally swallowed.) Wonder what archaeologists would make of it...
Thank you, Maria! Yes, looks like she might grow up to at least like perfume :-)
ReplyDeleteErin,
ReplyDeleteOuch! Oh my goodness, I am so sorry!
M,
ReplyDeleteIt's still wiggling :-)
Tina,
ReplyDeleteEwww, spinach. Never liked it either :-)
Thank you very much for your kind words1
Anita,
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Lee,
ReplyDeleteI haven't been absolutely and utterly swept away by any of his recent new releases. But we'll see...
M,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
Divina,
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, she probably always will be :-)
March,
ReplyDeleteAww! I think archaeologists would know, if vaguely, about this strange tradition of ours. :-)
You know, when he said that Diorama smelled very unique and then that there was incense in No 22, I became suspicious. I think he's been reading my blog :-) He swears, he hasn't :-)
Ahhh, please thank MrC & LMC for making me smile, such perfect tonic for Monday morning (someone had too much weekend in her weekend), but you & your clan must stop trying to seduce me over to Montale. Really. I get all excited & then they make my eyes water ;) Reminds me tho, must try the Chanel 22 again soon.
ReplyDeleteDivalano,
ReplyDeleteOh, you are welcome :-)
You should start gently with Montales then, maybe with White Aoud.
M, yes...incense series by Andy Tauer! I believe it was Maria B., that reviewed the two new mods on Andy's blog last week. There is an Incense/Rose and a Spicy/Citrus/Incense. They are both in development. I am counting the days!
ReplyDeleteKelley,
ReplyDeleteOoh, I'll have to look into that!
Boy is she cute! Count me in for at least a quarter! Preschool.....I'd give anything to have those days back! My baby just turned 20 ! I used to send him with "Mommy" notes in his lunch bag and his pockets, new ones everyday. I never realized it until he said something to me about 2 years ago just how much he had appreciated it as did his friends who lived vicariously through him. You will cry.....and you will be soooo excited when you see her! Picking up Alex after preschool was so much fun because we'd cuddle and go have treats!
ReplyDeleteBeth,
ReplyDeleteThank you! What a lovely idea, about the notes. I am going to start doing that!
How utterly adorable-- both Mr. C and little Miss C. I loved that post.
ReplyDeleteDucks,
ReplyDeleteThank you, I am glad you liked!
LOL! Priceless. I bet this tooth will fall out today. ;)
ReplyDeleteIna,
ReplyDeleteI hope so. Because it's all about that tooth here :-)
You two are officiall too cute for words.
ReplyDeleteYou get away with a quarter??? The minute she gets to preschool, she'll find out that she's getting robbed :-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, hope preschool goes smoothly for both of you.
Patty,
ReplyDeleteAren't they? :-)
R,
ReplyDeleteThank you! LOL at robbed. :-)
She wasn't crying when I left her there. I hope she won't cry at all. :-(
What lovely photos! What a smart and cute little girl! I can empathize with you-my eldest started first grade. Real school!
ReplyDeleteFor wiggly teeth, I find that a nice peanut butter sandwich can help them out if you want to hasten the tooth fairy's visit. ;)
Dust Glitter and Vapor,
ReplyDeleteAh, but she refuses to eat them now :-) Says they are sticky and hurt her wiggly tooth.
Real school! Oy!!
Greetings Colombina and Family...
ReplyDeletePlease be advised that in the Dental Compensation Act of 1996... It was upheld that payment for baby teeth would be established at a minimum of $1.00 (in all states excluded Minnesota and Oregon, where incisors and molars have separate rates)
And that annual cost of living adjustments should be reviewed by parents yearly. Addtionally, it was established that quarters are the preferred means of payment (so the one dollar must be delivered as four quarters) as they are the currency accepted at gumball machines which serve the expediate the losing of further teeth.
Multiple teeth-under-pillow placements are still allowed, however, for each tooth beyond the first one, only two additional quarters are required.
A measure was struck down which would have enforced each payment to include a 1040 as earnable income for the parent(s).
I hope this helps!
T.F.
Dear Tooth Fairy,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the information. As law-abiding citizens, we would not want to break the new $1.00 rule and will therefore commence the increased per tooth payment.
I would like, however, to bring to your attention the Nerve Cell Loss Compensation Act approved in July 2007 by the State Marriage Commission. The act states that each nerve cell lost by a wife during the course of marriage must be compensated by the husband in the amount of $0.000001 per cell. Please note, that no such compensation is required from a wife. Please also note that to make the payment convenient, the compensation is accepted not only in the monetary form, but also in the form of flowers, sushi, bags and perfume. For further information and to learn about the repercussions for non-payment, please visit ballandchain.org.
Warm regards,
Colombina
Please let me bring it to your attention that as of last Friday, August 24, 2007, the State Marriage Committee issued an Amendment to the Nerve Cell Loss Compensation Act: due to the majority female vote, an additional form of compensation was agreed upon - neck and foot rubs, as those areas directly affect the nerve system.
ReplyDeleteColombina,
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of that legislation. It must've been debated on one of those nights I was not watching C-SPAN ...like any night there's a game on.
You should be advised to read the small print where it states ...
" Nerve cell loss when related to unneccesary stressing is exempt."
Which is a good thing since it would be costing me $1,000s.
I could not afford that!
Just be thankful there is no compensation required (from wife) for BRAIN cell loss from my excessive sniffing and abuse of the olfactory nerve I encountered for your sniff-a-thon post.
Just kidding ... I have not lost any brains cells.
I could not afford that either.
Love,
Mr. C.
enjoyed reading the article as well as the comments!..how was Little Miss Columbina's first day at pre-school?
ReplyDeleteHey, can you imagine? Even the tooth fairy reads PST!!!!
ReplyDeleteIna,
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA, hurray for the State Marriage Committee! :-)
Mr C,
ReplyDeleteThe even smaller print says, the necessity of stress is judged by a wife, tee hee.
♥
Lavanya,
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you liked!
I will find out how her day was in about half an hour. Going to get her soon.
Kelley,
ReplyDeleteBut of course. Magic folk think we are a witchy good read :-)
Thanks for the howling....
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure.
I'll babysit her, any day.
great fun - especially the wiggly tooth. and i like the way they play off one another. very cute. and honest. glad they like diorama and no. 22. - minette
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! I'm going to have to get my husband to volunteer for a sniffathon when he comes back from Japan. She sounds like me with the "smells cheap" crack at a very expensive rose. Lovely post.
