A Rock & a Hard Place: Valentino Rock & Rose

By Tom

Lately it seems I've been a bit rose-nutty, reviewing a slew of rose scents. One that's been sitting looking at me balefully for a while is the sample of Rock & Rose, which I've been avoiding. Avoiding because I utterly loathe it. I can't be bothered to even look up the history of it to tell you who's responsible or why it was done. I can only imagine smelling it that it was management that thought they'd try to market to the Goth set. Yes, Valentino for the Goth set. What next? Vuitton for Vampires?

The thing about it is that it doesn't succeed on any level. A person who would buy Valentino clothing would sniff and dismiss it as a cheap little rose with a bit of Froot in the opening and too much musk in the base, while the Goth chiclets in their BPAL would smell the aquatic notes, lily and the powder, sneer a pierced upper lip and drop the old-lady bomb. I just find it annoying. 1.6 Ounces of this is available for less than $31 at Amazon, which is far better than the $68 you'll pay at retail. My sample was a gift with purchase.

  1. LOL- when I saw the title of this review- my first thought was ,'Oh- I remember hating this' and then I was even more surprised to read that you had reviewed this since I usually love many of the same scents as you(and I assumed you liked this enough to review it)..THEN when I actually read you review- I was like 'Ah- yes- now this makes sense. All is right with the world'..:D

I think mine was a sample with purchase too- might have been couple or more years ago..i remember rose and vanilla and the feeling of never wanting to smell it again..

Vuitton for Vampires, woot, woot! I agree, this was so banal, it wasn't worth getting the lowdown on it....

  3. Lavanya-

Glad I could be of service.

At first I was thinking that at least I could pour it on the bathmat and scent the bathroom but I didn't want it around at all..

It was sitting there. I smelled it and fist went "meh" Then it was more like "this cannot go unpunished"

Why is it that Donna's reviewing all these swoony rose scents and you're getting all the crap?

Is she a better picker than you, or does she just like roses better? Have you found a rose scent you like on your recent quest? I'm dying to read THAT review... :)

I'm sure you're absolutely on the money with regards to Rock'n Rose, which I disliked the idea of even before I saw the Goth-teen-porn ad.

  6. Hey- I liked Roses Musk! Geesh, if my likes sound like dislikes it's time for me to get a colonic or something!

Actually this one was a case of "I don't feel like trucking myself to the mall for a sample of something new; what's in the bag of freebies I haven't looked at>

Oh, I get the whole "What's in the sample box" deal. Though I count myself in that fraction of fumies that don't have access to local sniffage and have to rely on the sample box anyway. (I keep having to remind myself that there's no traffic out here in the country. That we have stars, not stores...)

But I thought you'd decided Rose Musc was too simple and girlified for you. Now I'm a bit puzzled - maybe I sped through the review too quickly and picked up the wrong tone.

  8. Mals-I think the SSS rose musc was the one Tom found girly (reviewed on Posse)..I admit- that was confusing- I had to go look up the Posse review because I also remembered Tom finding some rose very girlified (wasn't sure which)

  9. Muse-

I think that was Sonoma Scent Studio for the Posse. I liked it okay, but way too girly for me.
