Ambre Noir by Brecourt and a Giveaway

By Marina

A perfunctory search in the Fragrances of the World database reveals over 40 pyramid or accord notes, with some variation of "amber" in their name. There are plenty more that have ambery character. There are over 4000 fragrances containing at least one of those 40 notes. Since amber is such a ubiquitous ingredient, the search brings up plenty seemingly un-ambery scents like Dolly Girl by Anna Sui or Escada Ibiza Hippie. Since it would be an enormous task to count amber fragrances not featuring amber, ambre, ambra or ambergris in their name, I just counted the perfumes that have one of those in the title. There  are over 80 of them, and these would not include a lot of indie lines, like Brecourt.

Not to belabor the point, but there are plenty of amber perfumes out there, a lot of them quite good. And still each new (and often long-established) line is compelled to offer its own rendition. I don't know how many succeed in releasing something earth-shatterinly original (can you name a recent amber scent that surprised you?), but some do manage to come up with enjoyable. And that really is not a small thing.

This is what Ambre Noir by Brecourt is to me, an easy, comforting, enjoyable amber. The creators call it a fragrance of seduction, and certainly it is fairly sensual, in that languid, husky, velvety way that amber can be, but for me it is mainly a comfort scent, with a strongly gourmand undertone. I say, gourmand, but I couldn't tell you what dish it reminds me of, it is just non-specifically and very pleasantly edible. It might be the fruity magnolia and the honeyed myrrh that lend Ambre Noir this quality or it might that, as I am writing this instead of going to lunch, I am just hungry. In any case, I find Brecourt's verison of amber to be quite delightful. Another ambery offering in the line, Haram is even more obviously on the foodie side. Those looking for a budget-friendly version of the shisha-smoking cinnamon-cherry pie, Ambre Narguile, should pay to it close attention.

If you would like to receive a sample pack of Brecourt samples, let me know in your comment, what is your favorite amber perfume. One winner will be chosen at random. Draw closed.

No need to enter me, but my ears pricked up at the mention of Ambre Narguile, which I recently fell hard for, so Ambre Noir is a must-try for me! My favorite amber scent to date is Tauer Perfumes L' Air du Desert Marocain, which is not as sweet as many other amber scents.

I think my very favorite amber fragrance is Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan, just for its tenacity and ultra-resinous quality. It reminds me of fine incense I used to buy when I was younger, so I have very pleasant associations with the scent. I have a decant of Annick Goutal Ambre Fetiche on the way, I have heard much about it. I used to be obsessed with amber, but then I really burnt out on it a couple of years ago. Only in the past couple of months have my cravings for it returned.

Favorite Amber? By gods, that's a tough question!

My first thought goes to Ambre Fetiche, because I wore it so much this winter, but L'Ombre Fauve is a love, as is Olympic Amber, Amber Noir, and very recently, Alahine.

I freaking love amber. :)

I love many ambers, recently Ambre Orient by Armani Privé captured my attention as well as Alahine and Ambre Fetiche. I must say I have never heard of Brecourt, Ambre Noir sounds very interesting.

I have a big problem with Amber in western perfumes. It becomes too herbaceous like medical ivy! Lately experienced it in Amber Absolute or Ambre Narguile...In arabian perfumes containing amber I don't have this problem :/

My favorite amber perfume -- I've been searching for one for some time. The best I've found is not really an amber per se - OJ's Woman. Please enter me in the draw!

I love ambres but if I have to choose... I'd say L'Eau d'Ambre as that is the one I wore most last winter.

my faves are Ambre Sultan and L' Air du Desert Marocain (have been very into the drier, airier L'air this winter, it seems suffused with golden light where Ambre Sultan is deep and dark, but they're both resinous in a good way to me).

I also like L'Ombre Fauve which is very very cuddly and easy on me.

Please count me in! I love Amber and most oriental and earthy scents. Have never heard of Brecourt but am now intrigued. email in profile

My favorite Amber perfume was the discontinued Zara Ámbar. Oh, it was perfect! My boyfriend loved it too. It had great sillage and staying power.

Now my favorite is Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114.

I would love to try the Brecourt samples. Thank you!

Hands down, no question - my ultimate amber, indeed, my first-ever amber - was Ambre Sultan. Can't get enough when I'm in an amber mood. Olympic Amber by Olympic Orchids is almost as good (and that's saying a lot!). Ambre Naguile is...amber anathema on me, but I'm always up for a challenge! :)

My favorite is Annick Goutal's Songes. Really more of a floral, but its got a great amber vibe throughout. I think amber and gourmand would be a great combination. It reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where George tries to combine food and sex!

I can't say I've tried many different ambers, but the one I use and like is Lutens' Ambre Sultan. The way the amber is tempered with a bitter note keeps it from being too sweet, and that's the key for me.

My favorite amber remains Ambre Sultan - dry and mysterious and uncompromising. I adore amber. I should say, I adore some ambers. It is so frequently mis-handled into bland sweetness. But still - I smell every one I can get my hands on, so please enter me in the draw.

I love amber in theory, but often they turn a bit too "dirty" on me. Maybe the cumin that's in many of them? For that reason, SSS Ambre Noir is my favorite, it's very dry with just a bare hint of sweet, never turns weird :) Would love to be entered in the drawing to see how these are!

I used to be rather ho-hum about amber, but recently I find myself craving it. Weird.

Anyway, I've always liked iPdF's Ambra del Nepal, but sometimes it feels more about incense than amber. Ambre Sultan was one of the very first Serges I ever tried back in the day, and oh! how I hated it then. Not anymore...it's rich and luxurious and FB worthy now!

Sonoma Scent's Amber Noir (again with the Noir) is an awesome, resinous BIG amber that used to be a little much for me, but now I love it.

And my very recent amber obsession is Dior's Ambre Nuit. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a masculine, but it's beautiful with spicy floral undertones. Maybe some vanilla in there as well.

Funnily enough, I get nothing but baked apples in Amber Narguille.

Thanks for putting me in the draw :)

People have already mentioned my favorites -- Ambre Narguile in the original post, Olympic Amber (yes, another new fan of Olympic Orchids here!) and Arizona which is Olympic Amber's close cousin, less sweet one from the addition of ponderosa pines. SSS Ambre Noir, yes! Ambre from L'Occitane, yes, in that old style cologne bottle! They are all different and nice.

I tried Ambre Sultan and hated it with passion, and I am not wild about L'Air du Desert Marocain either.

My favourite amber perfume is Prada L'Eau Ambree, followed by Marc Jacobs Splash Amber. I definitely lean to the wispy and minimalist in my amber tastes, and gave away my bottle of Yves Rocher Voile d'Ambre precisely because it smelt "too ambery". Or possibly too "coumarin-y, but I'm betting too ambery as well!

I, like so many others, swoon for Ambre Sultan simply because of its fidelity to the idea of amber while managing to keep up the interest. My favorite these days is Eau Lente: it begins and ends ambery, but takes you on a journey there and back (shades of Bilbo Baggins) with lots to ponder in between.

I hope someone asks about wine-y scents soon, or at least starts reeling off their favorite unoaked reds...

And thanks for mentioning being hungry rather than going to lunch. I place great emphasis on feeling that wistfulness, unfulfilled desire. Longing is much, no?
