Eau d’Hadrien is my favorite Annick Goutal fragrance; it is also my favorite citrus scent. Moreover, it was Eau d’Hadrien that single-handedly converted me into a fan of citrus scents and started me on the quest (so far not quite successful) to find at least one more perfect lemon perfume, first being Eau d'Hadrien itself of course. This is not just straight lemon, cypress is quite evident intermittently, adding depth to the composition, but for me, overall, this is the clearest, most transparent, mouthwatering lemon fragrance imaginable. And that clear transparency is what I consider to be the most attractive quality in a citrus scent.
Whenever I smell Eau d’Hadrien, it makes me think (and long for) the drink my grandmother likes to make in summer, just a glass of very cold water with several slices of lemon and a tiny bit of sugar. Nothing clenches the thirst like that simple drink, and for me, Eau d'Hadrien is just as refreshing. Strangely enough, however, while I find most citrus scents to be too “cold” (too insubstantial, too light) in winter, Eau d’Hadrien, pure and translucent as it is, appeals to me in cold weather as much as in the heat of summer. I remember wearing it during what seemed to be the coldest, most bitter weather, while staying in a small English village in Oxfordshire. The place was, to a foreigner raised on Agatha Christie’s books, an epitome of Englishness, with a Norman church, an ancient cemetery, a single pub, a Manor and Old Vicarage. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed living there, and Eau d’Hadrien is full of nostalgia to me now. This light citrus scent was most enjoyable on frosty winter days, its scent practically sparkling, almost singing in the icy air.
Eau d’Hadrien is available at Sephora, $65.00 for 1,7oz.

An all time favorite scent for me. I've grown to love other Annick Goutal scents: Eau de Sud, Sables; I always return to Eau d'Hadrien. It's clean, seemingly simple scent seems so easy; it's brilliance lies in how complex it really is. For me, it's the essence of a summer that I never experienced. I only wish that someone where I live could do for Los Angeles what Ms. Goutal did for Europe; I'd love to have someone come up with a scent that captured the hot/ dry, citrus, ozone and jasmine scented evenings we get here.
I am exactly the same way. There are other Goutal scents I like, Sables, Quel Amour, Mandragore, Ce Soir...But I always come back to Hadrien. I can't imagine ever being tired of it. It is quite perfect.
I haven't been to LA, those evenings sound (smell) gorgeous.
You should, if you have a chance. People run down LA, but there is something about late summer nights here: there's a jasmine used as a hedge here that is night-blooming that is particularly scented during the hot, dry Santa Ana winds that Raymond Chandler wrote about ("Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks.") supplanted by the base note of the rosemary and thyme that people use here as landscaping, with the ozone of the winds (which are a bit like the ozone of a thunderstorm, but spikier), the faint smell of car exhaust, musk from the various coyotes and the faint smell of the sea.
Oy, reading this it sounds pomposo-stinkdor in the extreme. But it was just this experience walking down Benedict Canyon Drive to the Beverly Hills Hotel 20 years ago that caused me to relocate.
This was the first"boutique" scent (if it counts as such) that I purchased, a long time ago. I had never heard of it when an SA in a small shop someplace I was vacationing talked me into it. I wore it quite happily all that summer. I still think of it as the perfect summer scent.
Ah, sounds wonderful. And anyoe quoting Chandler can't possibly be pomposo. I love that quote.
Judith,
Annick Goutal was my first too :-) My first "boutique scent". Only in my case it was Ce Soir ou Jamais. Eau d'Hadrien was next.
Christina,
I remember you mentioning that you loved Hadrien, and I thought of you when I wrote that.
I agree that it should get more recognition that it does. But it also has a loyal following, I believe. Look at us all saying how we loved it for years! I am quite fickle when it comes to scents, but I've been wearing Hadrien for a while now and would never get tired of it, I am sure.
V,
It seems Eau d'Hadrien was the first Annick Goutal for quite a few people. No wonder there, it is a wonderful scent.
I know exactly what you mean about a scent singing in the air. That's how I feel about citrus and this perfume. And hooray for featuring my beloved Annick Goutal. I thought if I kept up the AG reviews no one would read my stuff anymore, so it's good to see someone else review an AG besides Songes.
Cait,
Your reviews of Goutal scents were big part of the reason why I decided to come back back to my favorite Hadrien.
Please don't stop reviewing Goutal :-) I love the way you write about her (or anything really) :-)
Oh, let's have a post on our first Annick Goutal!! Everyone must have a story... mine was Passion. The first time I smelled the line I thought, where have you been all my life? I probably own 6 or 7 now. Sadly, Hadrien doesn't smell as wonderful on me as it does on others; too rosemary-ish. My sister-in-law wears Ciel, and it smells unbelieveable on her, like iris in the rain. I'm in charge of buying her yearly bottle.
M, hope you will post on your quest to find one more perfect lemon -- would love to know what else you found!
March,
OK, you do the next My 1st AG Scent post! :-)Somehow, it seems to me there used to be a big deal made of Goutal line and now it is almost overlooked. Which is unfair to these wonderful scents. They are all so well executed, so subtle, so elegant. I can't even say there is a single scent I outright dislike among them.
R,
The quest conitnues, because so far nothing else is quite like what I am looking for- a clear, "thirst-quenching" lemon. Like Hadrien. And sometimes, when I put it on, I wonder why I even bother, it is so perfect :-)
Thank you dear N! Passion is a beautiful scent, and I am curious about Songes, but I have a feeling it won't be a "me" scent.
Marina,
Thank you very much. Ok, Ok, twist my arm, I will keep reviewing Annick Goutal scents.
March,
Hmmm, I have to look back through the haze of time to recall which was my FIRST AG.
Neela,
Very interesting that you find Songes to be a Diet Passion. Songes highlights vanilla instead of the tuberose-oakmoss combo in Passion and every drink on the market expands by the addition of Vanilla (like Vanilla Coke). As sodapop, so goes Annick Goutal?
God forbid.
*gently twists Cait's arm a little more, just in case"
:-)
i just discovered your blog today-i feel like i've found a friend!
i love your descriptions(are you a writer by trade?)i really resonated with your ode to"Eau d Hadrien". Do you remember "Love's Fresh Lemon"? that was my older sister's and i would swipe some when she wasn't around. Eau d'Hadrien reminds me of that Do you like "Petit Chere"(Cherie?)
I bought that when I was pregnant-it still reminds me of innocence and I feel really small and tender when I wear it. I am so glad I found you! Also, I immediately ordered "sloth" based on your review! You rock!
Brenda,
Thank you very much for your kind words!!
I don't remember Love's Fresh Lemon but I do like Petite Cherie. I don't think there is a single Goutal scent I don't like. :-)
I hope you like Sloth! I thought it was such an beautiful orange blossom scent, with something unexpected and unusual mixed in :-)
Have a wonderful week!
Marina.
Good day. I'm new here and must admit I am a perfume addict. At Christmas my boyfriend got me my first AG perfume : Nuits d'Hadrien.
I LOVE IT. I think it's a sensual smell. He loves Eau d'Hadrien but for now has to finish his MANDRAGORE bottle (which I tend to spray on myself sometimes ;) when he's not looking!). Her perfume line is very interesting. I'm stacked with samples and I am presently trying them all on to decide which is my next AG purchase...
Hi Nicole,
I love Goutal scents. I think my perfume addiction started with them. Enjoy the Nuit!
NICOLE SANDRA: I think my perfume addiction is going to become an expensive habbit!
I went on a "essential oil" hunt today and spent ... a lot.
I am trying to make my own fragrance, this could take a while, so I'll spray my Nuits until I've found my "odor" lol!
I bought my first Eau d'Hadrien and Eau de Ciel many years ago, and then indulged in Passion de Gardenia, Rose Absolue, Heure Exquise, and back to the first two, of which transparency is, indeed Marina, of the most outstanding type. And Eau d'Hadrien, after all, again and again.
Thank you for another beautiful review on this perfume. Can't wait to try it.
