Forbidden Fruit - Frosty Couture
By Beth Have you ever had a lover, one who was so delicious in all the right ways, but that you’d never be seen in public with? I’ve had a few of those affairs , absolutely delightful in their inappropriateness. There’s nothing like a dalliance with absolutely the wrong man to make you giggle a bit! It seem that there are also certain fragrances created with that similar forbidden appeal and I am pleased to say that I’ve just found another one of them! I went into Saks to try a sniff of the new Diesel’s today, and was instead sidetracked by the saleswoman who usually feeds my Annick Goutal addictions. She showed me the “Holiday” version of Juicy Couture, a fragrance that I have never looked, at let alone sniffed. At first I was taken aback, I’ve always considered Juicy Couture in the untouchable perfume category for a “mature” woman like me, sort of like miniskirts and long hair after 40 (although I still sport both!) Mona is a lovely woman though and I have always trusted her suggestions. Besides, her eyes were twinkling and she was wearing an irresistible grin like a big Cheshire cat so I was completely intrigued, and as I soon discovered , rightfully so! This particular Juicy Couture is sold in a big beautiful crystal bottle, with a little sparkly crystal snowflake necklace attached. There’s the cutest little Scottie dog emblem (Oh my Gawd…) emblazoned on the bottle and the whole package is rather pink, yet utterly fascinating in the most frivolous and tawdry way. It also has molten yummy sparkles in it that you have to shake the bottle first to mix, sort of like liquid mother of pearl. Then you spray it on with much affectation focusing especially on the shoulders and if you dare lower still. Its official name is “Frosty Couture”. I find that Frosty Couture is actually surprisingly good after the initial shock of bubbly teenage fruitiness! It is a supposedly limited edition (the sparkly version) and that beautiful bottle holds more than a few evenings of fun! Described as a “ Playful and glamorous Eau de Couture” and supposedly inspired by the “Golden age of French perfumery, Marie Antoinette and pastel cookie boxes” , Frosty Couture has very fruity top notes of watermelon, passion fruit and mandarin and finishes like a fabulous crème brulee topped with caramel, vanilla and a bit of patchouli. I was surprised that it smelled really good on me, I thought that it would just disappear into a marshmallow mess on my skin. Instead it became a velvety vanilla custard with a just a taste of the incredible chocolate and passion fruit macaroons that my sister brings me home from Laduree’ in Paris every summer. Needless to say, being a bit of a silly witch I love anything with sparkles, so I sprayed some more of it on (especially around the cleavage) and took it home to my very gentlemanly husband who blushingly told me that it reminded him of a scent that a stripper would wear and he thought it was pretty “in your face” sexy. I love that man. So I immediately went back to Saks and bought it, sparkly pink box and all. To be honest with you, I love it…. there I’ve said it. I’m not ashamed! I probably won’t buy it again though unless they keep it around with the sparkles, the shimmer gives this fragrance its raison d’être. I can also attest to my husband’s continued health and well being even as he devoured a few of those sparkles! So far, what I’ve noticed is that men seem to love this perfume, at least all of my husband’s stuffy pinstriped friends who kept sticking their faces in my neck when we went out for drinks. I told them where they could buy it for their wives, but they said that their women would never wear it for them, too sexy, too silly. So sad , but works for me, I love playing the muse! God, I feel so cheap……but it feels so good! Fortunately for all of you who want to join me in my Moulin Rouge fantasy there’s plenty of this to go around, at least for now! Please don’t wait… like Anais Nin and Colette , Frosty Couture is definitely sexy fun that’s completely wasted on the young! Macaroon photograph courtesy of davidlebovitz.com. Great post! I consider small, but regular doses of inappropriate things/behaviors fairly essential for living - makes life fun. Consequently, just went over to ebay to check out Frosty Couture. I don't do sparkles. Suddenly, though, they seem perfect. Essential even. I am going to try to resist purchasing unsniffed, but I seriously suspect I may want this after sampling. Just love the idea of how absolutely not me it is.
What a fun review! I find the original Juicy Couture to be much too sweet but I must go to my Saks and try this! I have decided that I don't care about age-appropriate-ness in perfumes very much - sure, I don't want the teenagers wearing my "womanly" stuff, not that they can handle it, but that doesn't mean I can't steal their girly ones! :-)
My confession? I like Philosophy Amazing Grace :) And Ralph Lauren Hot. But don't tell anyone, okay?
I could do with some sparkle in my life... :-)
My confession: I love Flowerbomb, both regular and extreme :-)
Wait, what? Over 40, no mini's or long hair? And I suppose no patent leather 5" platforms, either? Sorry, didn't get the memo, lalalala I can't hear you.
The watermelon would probably do me in but I must admit I'm a total magpie & adore shiny & glittery. Funny re the stripper comment, a "barmaid in a strip joint" blog I used to read talked about how working in a strip joint means you end up with glitter in everything you own ;)
i love your review, it makes me want to test the juice really badly - though i don´t have a clue if it´ll be (or already is?) available in germany.
this really caused a lemming - i´ll have to hunt it down!
...& i love sparkles :D
I think my staid office job has made me regress to childhood; I'm currently obsessing over: the movie Enchanted, buying all the classic Disney princess movies, and of course, sparkles...
beth-
you've done the impossible! you've made me want to sniff a Juicy Couture scent- one with glitter yet!
I think it's imperative, especially for us kids over 40, to get our inner vixen out once in a while. Good for you rocking the glitter cleavage, and you tell those guys to go get their ladies a bottle. I'm sure they would be pleasantly surprised at what their wives would do for them..
Beth, that was wonderful. I am a resolutely guilty chocolate lover ... Comptoir Sud Pacifique's Amour de Cacao is perfect on me, and so is Pilar & Lucy's The Exact Friction of Stars. And as you know, I am still searching to replace the Love's French Vanilla of my childhood... so you KNOW you have an accomplice!
The whole sparkles thing missed me... I wonder what my hubby would think?
LOL! Great entertaining review! Glad to know your husband is alright. ;) hahaha! -Anthony
Hi Elle,
Sparkles are perfect:)I loved your phrase "absolutely not me!" I think that's why I'm having so much fun with this one! I hope that you enjoy it too!
Flora,
I hope that you have fun trying this...the sparkles make it! I'm always steaking girly fragrances...I just can't resist! No surprise, I also can't resist Urban Decay peacock blue lipstick either!
Hey Gail,
I promise not to tell.....but then do you promise not to tell anyone about the new Victoria's Secret Vanilla that I bought yesterday filled with more sparkles :)
Marina,
My son's girlfriend Tess loves Flowerbomb and it loves her too.....I bet that it smells just incredible on you.....I'm truly jealous!:)For a really cheap sparkly thrill, go to the nearest Victorias Secret and buy the Sparkling Vanilla Supermodel scent...Fabulous and glittery!
Divalano,
No Worries!!!!! I will never give up my black patent stiletto's...NEVER!People always wonder why I look younger than my 48 years...I say that it's because I refused to buy into that silliness..glad you don't listen either!
Malena,
I hope that you can find it...then have fun with it:)
Denise,
I completely understand just how a job that's a bit ..well...Dull... can make you fantasize about sparkles, fairy princesses and I am happily regressing with you! I think of the sparkles in the same way that I think of Perla underwear....even if no one else can see it, it makes me feel really great simply knowing that I'm wearing it.....
Tom,
Now I am TRULY honored! And I bet that you'll look absolutely fabulous in those sparkles! I will take your advice and take all of my husbands friends shopping this Christmas...Their wives will love me:)
Darling Ducks....
My willing accomplice should try the new Vanilla Gold perfume that I just bought from Victorias Secret....I remember Love's French Vanilla and this is just as pleasantly cookielike (but with just enough Bourbon) Cheap...but very sparkly:)Quite sexy too! I have found that my husband...(Mr. Traditional) comes quite undone when I spice it up for him a bit...He's so wonderfully victorian:)
Hey there Anonymous.....My husband is a fabulous guy, just a kind wonderful man yet quite sexy in a most traditional double breasted suit kind of way...Himself in a tuxedo is simply to die for, but my preference is when he wears his kilt :)
B.,
Racy, even for you! I want some.
B2.
Hi, lovely post, I secretly love Ralph Lauren Hot, i bought it about 2 months ago from an online store and have got complements since i have worn it. Different smells suit different chemical makeups though i guess although the dry down on Hot with the vanilla and honeysuckle is to die for!
I love the evocative tone of your poem.
Red Apple
desire and pleasure
who are with you !!..
