Under the weather

The nose can't smell, the brain can't work. Therefore no review today. Please tune in tomorrow for Alyssa's article on Perfume Cool and The Rules and on Friday join us as Chandler Burr lets us get a glimpse into the process of creating The Perfect Scent.

Meanwhile, a short poll not related to perfume: please list three of your all-time favorite songs. I am bored with everything I have on my iPod and am looking for suggestions. Thank you and stay healthy in this tricky February weather!

Only three? Yikes! Let's just say I'm randomly picking three of my top fave 300. I'll go w/ Richard Butler's Good Days, Bad Days, Peter Tosh's Stepping Razor (or Coming in Hot) and EBTG's Troubled Mind or The Road. The second I post this I'm going to start agonizing over ones I didn't choose. :-( Must learn how to make decisive, short lists this year.

I hope you feel better soon too....

Good topic since my ipod (and many other items) were stolen last week and I could use some new ideas for when it gets replaced. I actually bought the soundtrack Juno just before it was stolen and was enjoying that for something different.

Feel better soon, dearest M!

Lets see...well, I can't guarantee you'll be terribly interested in what Im listening to, but Ill give it a shot anyway...

In Heavy Rotation on my iPod lately:

Arvo Part Summa - the entire album
Van Morrison - Into the Mystic, These Are the Days
Joni Mitchell Shine, her new album.
Will Young - Leave Right Now, Who Am I
Paolo Nutini - anything I can get my hands on.
Verdi - Ernani

Ferde Grofe - Grand Canyon & Niagara Falls Suite
Sondheim's A Little Night Music - original cast
Cy Coleman - City of Angels - original cast
Adam Guettel - Floyd Collins - original cast

Im a Classics, Jazz, Classical, Opera, Musical Theatre kind of guy...in case that wasn't painfully obvious.

Ouch..I hope that you feel much better soon!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's pretty tough to choose three, but I think that today I would choose Frank Sinatra's Witchcraft, Led Zeppelins, The song remains the Same and REM's Shiny Happy People. I'm with Elle, I've got thousands of songs on my iPod and I feel like I'm betraying them all by choosing only three :)Also, the entire soundtrack to the movie Practical Magic.....And Garden State and and and and and and and.........

Three is tough! I would have to say:

1. "Resurrection Fern" by Iron and Wine
2. "Elsewhere" by Sarah McLachlan
3. "Fly Away" by Indigo Girls.

These are all fantastic and are in no particular order. Hope you feel better soon!

I was in a similar state last week, hence no perfume reviews. All I wore was Louve for five days straight (go ahead, laugh). My all time favorite song is Into My Arms by Nick Cave. Second place goes to PJ Harvey's song The Mess We're In. Third is Annie Waits by Ben Folds.
(ask me next week and it might change)

Oh gee, my most played are:
Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) by Cher.

Songs to make you feel better:

"Braided Hair" by Nenah Cherry/Speech. It's on Itunes, on a "world music" album called "1 Giant Leap". It's pop, hip-hop-inflected world music, with a little rap.

John Mayer w/ Herbie Hancock on Herbie's album "Possibilities": "Stitched Up"

From Marc Broussard'e bluesy, soulful rock album "Carenco": (you might have heard the terrific "Home" on the radio last year) check out "The Wanderer".

marina, i hope you feel better soon! i would recommend some music, but i listen to goth and darkwave - someone once told me my music made him want to slit his wrists cause it was so depressing, so my faves probably won't be good for a sick person!

tom, if you see this, i wanted to tell you that i tried noir epices after reading your post on it in january, and ... i couldn't smell it. so i put on a whole bunch more, but i still couldn't smell it. i got the very faintest whiff of orange right at the top, and pepper. oddly, the super-faint pepper stayed until i woke up the next day! it also made my lips start to go numb after close sniffing, which seems bizarre, but it's actually happened to me before (passage d'enfer, but at least i could smell that.)

so, i'm curious - has anyone had any weird anosmic experiences like that before? so far, i can't smell narciso rodriguez for her, noir epices and - horror of horrors - bois des iles! please let me know if this is common, or my nose is just insane.

Alright, Obviously I skimmed the last paragraph and just read "iPod" and "suggestions" and I'll never do that again, I promise no more skimming and I'll follow the rules. I'm sorry for the laundry list above.

I wouldn't be able to think of 3 songs anyway, though. Nothing is coming to mind, oddly enough. There is only 35,000 songs on my iPod - apparently I don't like any of them, I dunno...

Three songs to cheer up lovely Marina:
1. Flowers in the Window by Travis;
2. Park Life by Blur;
3. These are the days by 10,000 Maniacs (seconding Billy D.)
I am not an ipod person as like to hear noise when I am out and about, but blast these at home for supreme comfort.
Get better soon, was great to meet you last week.

Feel better please!!! I am terrible at narrowing down lists of songs. I like Elle's Richard Butler choice. For more comfort(off the top of my head): anything by Lucinda Williams, Leonard Cohen, or the (defunct) group Morphine.

Avalon--Roxy Music
Blues and Roots--Charles Mingus

Feel better! I did my turn with The Bug this winter, took way too long to be able to smell properly, hope you kick it soon.
I can't even begin to tell you 3 songs, that's like picking 3 fave scents, but: As a child, Ball of Confusion by the Temptations was my favorite. I like most renditions of Mack the Knife & Ring of Fire. And I'd kill to find a phone that'd let me have "Whatever Lola Wants" as my ringtone.

Hope you feel better soon, Marina! You look very glam despite your illness - that IS you in the photo, right? Three songs? Three? OK the first three to pop into my head - Buddy Holly - Weezer, Heart of Glass - Blondie, Ducks - Lemonjelly. Oh and then there's Fly me to the Moon - preferably sung by Julie London. Ok that's 4.

I mostly lurk in the shadows, but when music comes into the conversation, I have to come out!
For comfort, it must be:
1. Piano Concerto #2 by Serge Rachmaninoff
2. Emperor Piano Concerto By Beethoven.
3. "Jupiter" from "The Planets" by Gustav Holtz
4. And last but not least, "Bohemian Rhapsody" by my main man Freddie Mercury and QUEEN!!

Hope you feel better soon!!

Marina, anything from the Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis Cookbook Vols 1, 2 and 3 should make you feel more energetic - but maybe you should leave those for when you're recovering. For now, there's a new Diane Krall recording which is very restful - make Mr. Colombina get it for you. And I do hope you get better very soon.

Dearest Marina, I'm so sorry to hear that the cold continues. Ugh. My nominations for your ipod:

Let Johnny Cash tell you all about how you've got the strength to last through worse: anything off of the Folsom Prison Album.

Let the amazing Afro-Brazilian Virginia Rodriques soothe and expand your spirit: anything from Sol Negro

Refuse to be cheered up in achingly melodic style with anything from the amazing singer/songwriter Patty Griffin. Her last few albums especially: "Impossible Dream," and "Children Running Through." For just two songs I'd do "Making Pies" and "Mary" from earlier albums.

Oh, poor Marina, get well soon !
Let's see, hmmm,...I'm sending onto your iPod :
1. George Michael: They won't go when I go (from Listen without Prejudice)
2. Mercury & Bowie : Under Pressure (I saved one place with combining them, otherwise I should have named a song form each, separately...)
3. Frankey goes to Hollywood : Welcome to the Pleasuredome
4. Kate Bush : Wuthering Hights
5. Pink Floyd: Shine only crazy diamond

And so on, and so on - so I rather recommend a whole CD : Allison Goldfrapp's "Felt Mountain" !

Love,

Oh, please get well soon!

Here is my list - hard to pin down only 3:

1. "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. - probably my favorite song of ALL time. Problem is you can't understand why it is so great unless you have had a broken heart.

2. "New Year's Day" by U2 - after all these years, still the best song they ever did, IMHO.

3. "Michelangelo" by Emmylou Harris - impossible to describe why I love it, but maybe words are not needed. OK, ANYTHING by Emmy is good!

(Plus - Keep Emergen-C and Zicam on hand to stop nasty colds in their tracks. They work for me like nothing else ever has.)

Well, I'm very late here in wishing your a speedy recovery, but I couldn't resist the challenge. Like some others I'm having trouble with the three concept, so:

"I Want you to Hurt Like I Do" (or "Guilty" or "Rednecks") by Randy Newman (good for misanthropic moments)

"Wise Up" by Aimee Mann (ditto)

"Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" or anything by Stevie Wonder (good for dancing with the Swiffer)

"It's Your Thing" by the Isley Brothers (ditto)

Any of the 1960s work of Sam Cooke
