Clinging Vine: Serge Lutens Datura Noir
 By Tom Datura the plant is lovely, toxic and hallucinogenic. The 2001 release Datura Noir is true to the name. It's a venus flytrap of a scent, those lush white flowers draw you in; the almond cookie aspect of it reminds me that cyanide tastes of almonds. It's a big giant white flower party, fatty with coconut and overstuffed with tonka and vanilla. It's sexy, it's smothering; it's a force of nature. My scent twin ran from it, writing that it was like Audrey II from "Little Shop of Horrors" I sort of think if they ever remade "Sunset Blvd" (perish the thought!) Norma Desmond would wear Datura Noir, and Joe Gillis would still be dead in the pool. Datura Noir is available at the usual suspects, $120 for 50ML. Oh I LOVE Datura Noir, it's one of the few powdery florals I can wear - in fact I made an exception to my usual rule when I first smelled it and I just had to have it. I went in to the store planning to buy something else and came out with this poisonous beauty. I like perfumes with danger lurking in the background....
And yes, it's the perfect Norma Desmond perfume!
I love Datura Noir too. I have a couple of samples I've been using, but I don't think it's FBW for me. I love sweet, but it might just be a little too sweet for me. I'm traipsing down an oudh-y, leather-y path at the moment. But gosh, that almond-cookie thing is good. Really good.
This sounds great to me. As someone who has yet to venture into Serge Lutens frags, this might be the one I start with. Thanks for this review.
I love Datura Noir and don't find it overpowering at all, so if you haven't tried it don't be afraid! I like it almost as much as Tuberose Criminelle, my current SL favorite.

A great fragrance, although I never understood why it is considered so 'big'. On my skin it is a tamed Datura, not Noir.
I enjoy it more as inspirational sniff than as a fragrance I wear.

I think it might be application? I've noticed that some people who like big scents like to apply them in a big way..
I like almond cookies, but for desert, not in my perfumes :-( The plant, on the other hand, sounds quite interesting :-)

wikileaks has had me wondering on those cables, yet unread, that may contain material about odd smelling leaders or deliciously irresistible ones. Imagine a diplomat sitting 'there', in any of those circumstances, sniffing away, but hesitant to write it in his or her report the the Secretary of State...I'm sure in those 250.000 cables there must be one...I read in www.elpais.com one that comes close to that, the one that describes the corrupt wedding in Dagestan...but although one can almost smell it, there is no specific mention. We can play at guessing.
Datura Noir starts off rather heady, with all of its notes in substantiation. They gradually rearrange themselves, in no particular order you might notice the mandarin shed. Eventually it resolves into a tropical floral with subdued hints of coconut and chocolate and a very trivial dusting of powder.
I agree that the almonds contribute to the vaguely poisonous effect of Datura Noir -- if it's an almond cookie, then it's one of the one from Flowers in the Attic!
Fortunately, I LIKE smelling like a toxic flower wrapped around a poisoned cookie, and I only wish Datura Noir was stronger on my skin.
