Like This

"If anyone wants to know what "spirit" is,
or what "God’s fragrance" means,
lean your head toward him or her.
Keep your face there close.
Like this."
Rumi

It took me a while to figure out WHAT Like This reminded me of, and after the association came, I loved Tilda Swinton's Etat Libre d'Orange fragrance all the more for it. The perfume reminds me of the smell of home-made "lollipops" of my Soviet childhood, the kind that you make by dissolving sugar in some water and heating the mix in a spoon over a burner on the stove...I invariably burned the "lollipops" a little bit and rather enjoyed the bitter sweetness that resulted from that...The burnt, caramelized feel is my favorite characteristic of Like This.

The home-made "lollipop" association might be responsible for the fact that everything about Like This strikes me as touchingly, endearingly child-like...from orange blossom (baby products) to pumpkin (Halloween) to ginger (Christmas) to mandarins (New Year's Eve)...Immortelle, when not in an overdose, has a certain cuddly, fluffy quality and heliotrope is an epitome of tenderness..."It’s an idea that makes me very, very warm and happy," Swinton said about the perfume. And that is an effect it has on me. Because of the delicate spiciness of ginger, slight earthiness of immortelle and vetiver and that burnt effect, there is also something undeniably quirky, slightly off-kilter about Like This...if it were a film about a childhood, it would be by Tim Burton... starring Tilda Swinton, of course...

(I also adore the orange color association of the fragrance; from the packaging to the notes, it is a visual joy to this fan of the hue.)

I cannot think of a better perfume in which to see off this year. (What will YOU be wearing on New Year's eve?) In fact, this is the first full bottle that I wanted to own in what feels like ages, and, thanks to my Santa, now I do; the first scent I felt "twirly" about (a term borrowed from this wonderful post on a wonderful blog, Notes from Josephine). Happy New Year, everybody! May 2011 take it easy on us and be sweet, exciting and happy. Like This.

Image, my very own. :)

There are only 2 ELd'Os that I really love, the Rossy de Palma rose, and Like This. Gorgeous! But tonight I'll be wearing my always-favorite, HM's Magical Moon. Happy New Year, Marina!

Lovely post! I have not decided about Like This. I try it now and then and there is just something I can't quite wrap my nose around. Something off-putting. I need to really really try it again - I have a decant, so I can take my time.

Tomorrow night I will either wear Coromandel, if I can get my bottle tomorrow at Chanel, or my newly-rediscovered long-lost Chanel No. 5. I had thought I could never wear it again because I wore it when I was 13, but I wound up with a bottle of vintage edc and it is so delicious, I love it all over again.

I want to feel twirly as well! :) Such a great word to use in perfume context.
I have no idea what I'll wear tonight, I haven't even given it any thought. There's not much time left, I'll start thinking now. :)

I simply adore Tilda S. - and I would love to like "Like this". It's very light on me and disappears very quickly. Still trying...

Happy 2011, Marina.

What a lovely review for my favorite new release this year. I really adore LT and funnily enough, it has lasting power on me too. Me and my scent devouring skin - go figure! I was planning to wear Champagne de Bois for NYE, but since the husbnad recently decided he hates it - :( - I'm rethinking it and haven't come up with the perfect substitute yet. Since we're spending a cozy night in , by the fire, and I'll be cooking and we'll be sharing a REALLY good champagne, perhaps Tonka Imperiale or maybe Ava Luxe Kashmir Spice... Happy New Year everyone!

Marina, have you seen Ms. Swinton's movie "I am love" or in Italian, "Io sono l'amore" (2009)??? It is shockingly wonderful. Great review, by the way. I can't wait to try it! I will be wearing SL Gris Clair.

Happy New Year!

Hi Marina - Champagne de Bois is by
Sonoma Scent Studio and I think it's Laurie's best, though I do appreciate several of her scents.

Who needs perfume when you've got those feet? :-)

It's still early here, not sure what to wear - maybe I will follow Beth's lead and get out my little vial of vintage Nuit de Noel. It's cold and blustery here so I need something cozy!

I have so much enjoyed your description of Like this. It's a scent I want to try this year when possible. As for me, I started the New Year wearing Grand Amour by Annick Goutal. The way you describe Like this takes me back in time and full of joy. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I haven't decided yet if I need a bottle or not, but Like This was definitely one of the more memorable scents I sampled in 2010. I entered 2011 wearing the last few drops from my bottle of Theorema extrait, probably never to be replaced. Hopefully this year will bring some new fragrance loves for all of us. Does the adorable picture mean that Little Miss Colombina has a new sibling? If so, congratulations!

Oh, the little toes. (Heart breaks and swells a little, all at once.)

I missed New Year's Eve with you here, but am so glad to hear more love for Like This. I think it is a quiet, but not simple, delight. I know this one bothers some ELd'O fans...but me, not at all; of course, I am a fan of understated confidence.

To be honest, ELd'O seemed to be becoming all about the gimmick, and a screaming one at that. Nice to hear they can play a ballad every now and then, though I won't be surprised if there's a screaming power rock chord in the next offering. :)

Wishing everybody a little "twirly" in the new year.
