Cookie Cutter: Serge Lutens Jeux de Peau
By Tom I can be called a Serge Fanboy. He's thrown openings with everything from gasoline to cat pee (to some) at me, and I've grinned and said, "Merci Monsieur, puis-j'avoir une autre?" Jeux de Peau is the first of his that for me is a genuine scrubber. The immortelle, apricot and "bread note" conspire on my skin to smell like buttered popcorn. Actually, that's not quite true. It smells the way that Jelly Belly buttered popcorn jelly beans taste, which for me is not a good thing. After an hour or so, it becomes a very nice sandalwood along the lines of Santal Blanc. Since I already have a decent amount of both Santal Blanc and its earthier cousin Santal de Mysore I can pass on this one. As always, your mileage may vary. $120 for 50ML at the usual suspects. My sample was from ScentBar. Labels: Serge Lutens, Tom |

Tom! OMG that was my total fear - that this would smell like Buttered Popcorn Jelly Bellies! I swear, sometimes discussions of this has made me queasy, with all the talk of toast and butter.
I will be staying far far away.
I love Jeux de Peau, and now that you mention it, I love Buttered Popcorn Jelly Bellies too. ;) Although on me this fragrance is foody for exactly 15 seconds, then we are in lovely sandalwood territory. As they say: To each their own. :)
I had to laugh out loud (I'm sick at home, so it's quite an achievement - thank you, Tom).
I am still curious about the bread note...
I love that perfume, Serge Lutens has really surprising skills !
Keep going, that blog is really nice.
Alex
Oddly, when people say "buttered popcorn," one of the first things I think of is that jellybean flavor. Blergh.
Eventually, I'll try it. For now, {waves to Olfactoria} I'll let those more inclined to enjoy it have at it.
Those Santals, those...they call to me. One thing I appreciate about the House of Serge: You can have fans in extremis, falling on opposite poles of "like" depending on the scent.
Total bummer...then again, I guess that's one that I won't be dying own...
Tama-
I was sort of shocked at how much that note was loathesome on my skin..
olfactoria-
you are one of the lucky ones!
Luckily for me Uncle Serge makes other sandalwoods that I can wear!
lady jane-
I would love to read your impressions..
Alex-
I'm glad it worked for you, and thanks!
scentself-
That is something about Lutens; they're almost never boring.

It might be better on you. I was dying to get away from it..
i confess I'm not drawn to any perfume that metions 'bread" as a note. Although a lovely sandalwood drydown - that I could like!
Imortelle always smells like curry powder to me. Curry, bread and apricot- doesn't sound like the most fortuitous combination. But I love the smell of buttered popcorn, though I'm not sure I want to smell like that.
loathesome indeed... i HATED this perfume... actually made me feel "trapped"... a claustrophobic scent
A scrubber? Really??
I certainly wouldn't wear it myself, but I was impressed with its construction.
Maybe the fact that some people don't like will work in its favour?
Was a scrubber on me to, basically. Heavy, inelegant, just unpleasant.
maggiecat-
I could have loved bread. Even bread and jam. It was the butter. Basically they took that butter note in Fracas and amped it up to 11. Not so great on my skin..
Marian-
I didn't want to smell like it either.
ghostranchguy-
That's exactly how I found it; claustrophobic. Good word for it.
Persolaise-
Yep. A scrubber. For me, anyway. They found the one note than when made a star sends me running for the Dawn Liquid..
Marina-
"Heavy, inelegant, just unpleasant"
That covers it!
