Foodie Sunday...In Which Tom is Feeling Ennui
By Tom I'm in a rut. I want to write that I'm running off to champagne-soaked brunches in Santa Barbara or high-level taste-testings of caviar at Petrossian. My reality is early laundry and a visit to Whole Foods to poach the breakfast bar (hint: bacon weighs nothing..). So I am asking you readers to fill in with a roadmap of places to have brekkies. I know you can give a tour; please chime in. One day I'd like to do a road trip of breakfast of the USA. Of course if booze is involved I might have to crash on your sofa... Image source, mylot.com. In Madison, Wisconsin I recommend the Blue Plate Diner http://theblueplatediner.com/. In particular the black bean burrito :) Served with the homefries and toast, it's soooo good.
Tom! Get in your car a drive down to LaJolla. Go to The Brockton Villa, which is on Coast Blvd, grab a paper and wait for a table out on the patio! Get the Coast Toast or my personal favorite, the chilaquiles! Do it! Now! You won't be sorry! www.brocktonvilla.com
Stage Deli in NYC, 7th ave between 52nd and 53rd...The Adam Sandler sandwich...
Olga's Diner in Marlton, NJ. Get the #5 special (sausage, bacon, white pudding, home fries, fried tomatoes, fried mushrooms, and 5-egg western omlette) The coffee is all you can drink and it's only a few more bucks to get it champagne.
Well, if you're ever in Magnolia, Arkansas, you should try Mr. James Delicious Food for breakfast anytime of day! ;p
Mmmmmmm, breakfast!
Wild Thyme, South Pasadena
The Filling Station, Orange
Toasties, Pacific Grove
And of course The Pantry, 9th and Figueroa
I also love eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel, which you will find along any large interstate in most states.
Tom, it would be worth your time to make the drive down to San Juan Capistrano for breakfast/ brunch at the Ramos House Cafe. Eat wonderful food, well prepared and presented in the old town near the mission. No better way to start the morning.
Cafe Besalu in the Ballard area of Seattle. Best pastries I've ever had. Croissants, ginger biscuits and during the holiday season, wonderful spicy holiday cookies like basler brunsli. New batches of something wonderful come out of the oven all during the day. Nothing better than a newly cooked, warm croissant for breakfast
No question about it, Pine State Biscuits (2 locations now)is the place to go for breakfast here in Portland, OR - humongous Southern style biscuits & gravy with eggs and grits, or those very same biscuits made into sandwiches, including the famous Reggie Deluxe - biscuit, gravy, fried chicken, bacon, cheese AND an egg. If you are still alive and somehow did not get your daily carbs, order the house-made Butternut Squash Bread. Southern comfort to the max!
Dupar's for dining in a time warp. Joan's on Third, Doughboys, etc on Third, Urth Cafe (these places require a dining companion, though). I, myself, do not partake of the breakfast outside the home thing, but there's a few boring options for you.
By the way, BLOGGER is messed up. I am prompted to join BLOGGER when trying to sign into my Google Account. No desire to give Google even more information about myself since I'm pretty sure they are making cyborgs of us all - with their own little credit cards...
