Foodie Sunday: Wake-up Call

By Tom
Yes, it's all about caffeine.  I like caffeine myself, but it's not something that I can indulge in too much lest I end up vibrating like a tuning fork.  I enjoy coffee once in a blue moon, but am more apt to have tea or (gasp) Diet Coke.  I know some Southern readers will be horrified by the statement, but one of the things I like about Subway and McDonalds is that they serve unsweetened Iced Tea so I can indulge and not be getting a lot of sugar.  The tea lattes at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf are delicious, but have rather the opposite effect: 15 minutes after drinking one and I'm ready for a nap.

Coffee for me is usually plain with milk.  It's funny the regional differences: in New York if you order "regular" coffee it will be with cream and sugar, in Chicago it'll come to you black.  Of course. I live in Los Angeles, where someone's coffee order will be slightly less complicated than the instructions on how to build an ICBM.  Perhaps it was standing behind someone who was ordering their triple half-caf decaf mocha macchiato made with half-soy half-goats milk extra foam with non-fat nutmeg and a twist (see LA Story) that made me give up and started drinking Diet Coke..

What's your favorite caffeine?  Or are you caffeine-free?

Matcha latte for me! It's probably not a secret how much I love tea though ;-) I stay away from coffee not just because it gives me that buzzy feeling, but also the aftertaste is too strong. I'll have it once in a blue moon.

I live in Hungary, and I like coffee espresso without sugar, but with a bit of coffeecream.

I start every day with 2 mugs of two strong double shots of espresso lattes made with Blend. I wonder why I've gained a little weight? Perhaps if I made them with butter? Well, at least I don't have SUGAR in them (pats self on back).

Because I am an addict, I rarely drink the stuff anymore. I have come to love tea alot, however when I fall off of the wagon, it's a personal French press pot of Viennese with cinnamon , laced with a bit of honey and fresh cream.
It is usually when I'm out though as I am forbidden to keep a French Press in the house having shattered two of them in an effort to make the coffee faster:)

Earl Grey tea for me, with milk. My best reason for getting out of bed in the morning.

I used to drink energy drinks, especially a sweet one called No Fear. I try to avoid that now though.

I like coffee- but I rarely drink it because of the very same 'vibrating like a tuning fork' phenomena- too much nervous energy (and I have enough of that without any caffeine..:)). There are two non-chain very nice places in Laguna Beach that I will go (once in a blue moon..:)) to get my coffee fix.

There is an asian tea place near my house and I sometimes drink their iced teas (which are often too sweet though)..Growing up in India, tea usually meant a sweet and milky concoction which is why I never got into it and vastly preferred coffee.. But I seem to like non-milky green and floral teas

I enjoy both, but tea does make me sleepy sometimes. I like my coffee mocha style and as dark a roast as possible - go big or go home is my stance on coffee.

For tea I like many kinds - Earl Grey is my favorite but I also enjoy other blacks teas and green tea. I like to skip coffee one day a week so I have morning tea instead. A current favorite is Yorkshire tea, which is a very strong English-style brew that is quite bracing.

Ayala-

Coffee has become a once in a blue moon for me too. But I do have to give props to a really great cup of coffee.

What is "blend"? As someone who likes his espresso with double cream I can only imagine..

Beth-

Once again we're like cousins. When I drank it it was in ludicrous amounts and if I was going to have it in the house the French press would be the only way to go. Which I can't. Because I'd break it. So I take a slug of Coke Zero in the AM which I like, but don't need more than 3 ounces of.

How dreadfully dull I've become..

I had to laugh, you do have the LA cafe scene down pat. In the morning, when I am out, I drink a double shot cap semi- dry no sugar. At home I drink Irish breakfast tea. Currently I buy the one from Trader Joes, with a bit of milk. I tried their English Breaksfast but found I had to put 2 bags in each cup. I also love tisanes; and have all sorts of variations. At night its expresso with just a bit of sugar, or a twist of lemon peel. Kathleen

homemade double lattes.. been doing them since the 70's.. (not sure why folks don't invest in home equipment what with the cost of espresso chains and those annoying laptops)

I drink one mug of coffee in the morning, made with Oren's Daily Roast Sumatra Mandelhing beans, ground in the store on #4. I use a Melitta-type filter cone, with brown paper filters from Trader Joe's and water brought almost to the boil in an electric kettle.

I am a definite caffeine hound; I don't care for hot coffee, but I do love my iced mochas with a double shot. I have one every Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

I depend on Co-Cola for my daily caffeine jolt. I am Southern, and like it for breakfast. Preferably a fountain Coke, but the one sin bottles are also awesome. No cans or plastic bottles, though.

Have y'all every tried Vietnamese iced coffee?! I am here to tell you....it ain't for sissies!

I'm like you - coffee makes me jittery (and upsets my stomach to boot), and I'm not crazy about the taste either. A nice latte once in a blue moon is OK and I do love the smell as my husband's is brewing in tha morning.

I do need caffeine though not too much. Generally, I have a cup of tea in the morning (usually Irish Breakfast from TJ's, like Kathleen!) and a Diet Coke at lunch.

I love coffee and freely admit that I'm dependent on it to get my eyes open in the morning. Our farmers market carries a large variety of coffees from various countries, we make it in a press, it tastes good -- but that's not my real reason for drinking it!

There's nothing like a double shot of supremely bitter espresso to accompany a chocolate dessert at a restaurant, either.
