Foodie Sunday: Cheese
By Tom
I know it's been a while and I'd love to tell you I've been living on a diet of mung beans and air and couldn't post. But I haven't, I've just been lazy.
So, let's talk cheese. I like sweets well enough but given the choice of chocolate and cheese I'll go for the latter. A piece of something blue is something that I like more than the richest chocolate. Back in the day I used to make a sandwich of a sourdough roll, oil-cured Ligurian sun-dried tomato and the stinkiest cheese I could find at my Prince street place of employment. Hey, I was 24 and those bazillion calories could be burned off at Area. These days I still love that combo, but try to keep it down to once a month, but cheese is still my food sin of choice. Cheddar, brie, blue you name it. I'm even happy with Kraft American Singles grilled between two pieces of Pepperidge Farms white. If there's a cup of steaming tomato soup.
So tell me, what's your favorite fromage? Your favorite recipe that includes it? Who's a cheesehead out there? |

I am! I love a really sharp Vermont cheddar... gjetost with tart apple slices... and I've got a piece of sage Derby for Sunday lunch with tomato soup 'n' crackers. Vive le cheese!
Hey Tom: You expressed the same opinion I've always had: I'd rather have cheese than chocolate and I looove chocolate! However, since I live in the south and not close to a major metropolitan area, I've never had the chance to develop a taste for any really interesting cheeses, so I guess my favorite is plain ol' sharp cheddar. My favorite cheese dish - would have to be Macaroni & cheese, heavy on the cheese! However, my late uncle married a young lady from Long Island back in the 1940's and she would talk about when she was growing up, a Limburger and onion sandwich was a regular thing for them.
I love cheese! In my corner of the midwest are several very good independent cheese makers. One makes a vegetable and horseradish goat cheese that is remarkable. It goes very well with robust dark beer, out in the backyard this time of year.
ME ME ME :::raising both hands:::: love cheese. Lucky to live in San Francisco surrounded by the happy cows of Marin County and some amazing cheesemakers. Plus the ability to get very good imports. I just returned from Paris, though, and my best/dreamiest memory of this past trip is not the shopping/sniffing (there was none), but this epic cheese plate I had "instead" of dessert one night. Sigh.
I just have to butt in here and say there is really no reason to choose between chocolate and cheese. Me and my husband visited the Ancora restaurant, a high end restaurant in Krakow, a few years back and had "Chocolate and Blue Cheese Soufflé" for dessert. It was lovely :)
I don't think I've progressed to the truly stinky cheeses yet, but it's tough to beat gooey, warm brie with some crackers or bread and fresh fruit. Yum!
There are so many that are delish. Irish Dubliner, sheep's milk Feta from Israel, Adam's Reserve Extra Sharp Cheddar... love 'em all!

Me too!
I love cheese! From the sharpest Vermont cheddar to the fruity Grana Padano parmesan I use in my homemade pesto, it's all good, and I have yet to taste anything made with Ricotta that I won't eat.
I still love good old mac and cheese, but I like it made with "fancy" cheese, not Velveeta (shudder) and I like to make my own grilled cheese sandwiches with whole grain bread and cheddar cheese so sharp it bites you back!
me, me, me! i'm a fellow cheese-head! nothing like a good grilled cheese sandwich to make my day. and one of my fave dishes is refried beans loaded with cheddar cheese and eaten with potato chips. and now i have to go on a diet... but cheese! yey!
cheers & cheese,
minette
Grilled chilli haloumi drizzled with roasted red pepper sauce.. Yummy.. But then I love cheese.. I hv my 'sin days' where all I hv for dinner is crusty white bread, lotsa different cheeses n a large glass of wine. Best enjoyed alone or with someone who loves cheese as much as you do... Lol
