Perfume Review: Caron Eau de Reglisse

Eau de Reglisse is a Limited Edition fragrance released by Caron for summer 2006. According to Les Senteurs, it will only be available till August 2006. I am not a fan of anise and licorice, in perfume or in cooking, so it came to me as surprise that I liked Eau Reglisse. It is an easy-going, straightforward composition, not a Caron masterpiece by any stretch of imagination, but very delightful nevertheless.

The scent has been described as "a fantasy confection from the sweet-shop” and “tempting us to indulge in sweet sinful gluttony”, however, on my skin, it is thankfully not overly sweet and not obviously gourmand. Eau de Reglisse is a rather dry, fresh fragrance, in which the potentially overwhelming purple sweetness of licorice is brightened and kept in check by the citrus and spiced up by ginger and nutmeg. In the drydown, patchouli, vanilla and musk add some “substantionality” to the composition, weighing it down just enough so as not to let it become too summery-light. Easy to wear, joyful and comfortable, I thought Eau de Reglisse was quite adorable.

Eau de Reglisse is available at Les Senteurs, £38.00 for100ml of Eau de Toilette.

Interesting. Both you and V have such nice things to say about. (I like anise and licorice in baking, but not in perfumery usually.) I think though that I need another LE like I need a hole in my head, so while it sounds lovely, I think I must give it a pass.

Katie,
I am tired of LEs and tired of being heartbroken from perfumes I love being discontinued. But I don't think anyone would love Eau Reglisse passionately enough for their hearts to be broken when it is gone, you know? It does not seem to me to be a perfume to inspire such a passion. :-) It is perfectly nice, but...when it is gone, it is gone.

A fantasy from the sweet shop? I *adore* licorice of any sorts, unless it's salted (blech). But subdued licorice? With patchouli? I must say I'm lost. Must procure a sample.

Well, I was SUPPOSED to get a sample of this from Bendel's (a sniffa thing). But they sent it in a regular envelope with no bubble wrap! The surprising thing is not that mine broke, but that others seemed to receive it unharmed:) I informed them about the mishap, but haven't heard back. So I will smell it sometime. I do like licorice and anise (to eat, drink, and--if not overdone--to smell), and it sounds very pleasant, but not like a must-have. (I'm counting the days until Lonestar Memories:)

Ina,
It is not salted and it is not over the top sweet either. I think you might like it!

I thought this one was pretty tasty. Not sweet enough to give a headache, but like i said, lollipop more than licorice.

Sounds worth trying, M, if not exactly worth going out of my way to get a sample. Perhaps I'll manage a visit to Caron before it expires :-)

Well I feel about anise as you do, so maybe I'll give this a sniff. If you say so. :O)

Cait,
I think it is tasty too. I am just glad that it is not too sweet and not over the top gourmand. There is an unexpected dryness here that I enjoy.

Christina,
It is lovely but I don't think it would jump to the top of your wish list.
I hope you are enjoying your B-Day!

V,
My sentiment exactly. When it is gone, I will not miss it. :-)

R,
You might like it, although you won't necessarily *love* it. It is not too sweet and too gourmand.

Victoria,
Anise/licorice and my enemies. So I was shocked to find out that Eau de Reglisse was perfectly wearable for me. So I say, sample with no fear :-)

Are you viewing it in Firefox or Safari? It won't work then. Try Interent Explorer and I am working on it too, hopefully it will be back to normal soon

Sadie,
Does it look OK to you now?

Yes it does. Spassiba!

But why can`t Blogger just put some possibilitys to ad categories in to their platform. Can`t they imagine that they are loosing a lot of people to wordpress only for that reason????

I think 2006 will become a bad year for Blogger.

Anyway, I discovered something named Blogcharm. It gave me the "bloggerfeel",(that I actually like) but with the Categoriposibility.

This is nice. Fairly linear, and not to sweet at all. It's not something that I would go out of my way to buy, mind you (especially at $90 retail)

Can I just say that I really hate planned obsolescence in perfume? If I really love it, I want to keep it around.

T,
I fell in love with this a couple of days after writing this post. :-) It actually lasts OK on me. It is now available at ImaginationPerfumery and Parfum1 for about $50. Just sayin'.

really? I'll have to give it a second try. I might have been also deciding I don't like it because it will only be sold for a month more. That obsolescence bugs me. If if it's good, at least make it every summer. Don't thrill me and then tell me I can never have any more!
