Spring Favorites and a Prize Draw

Alyssa
Ta’if, by Ormonde Jayne: The surprise hit of my spring was the velvety, pepper-dusted saffron rose of Ta’if. It’s a perfume I normally wear in winter—the cold, dry air makes its rich jewel-tones sparkle—but this year, on the days when my spring favorites were simply too tender, too open, it gave me polish and grace without armor.

Beth
I can’t help it.....in the spring it’s always Diorissimo. Absolutely no other perfume will do for this time period where the world is greening and the air smells fresh , hopeful and alive with the promise of that fertile passion.

Kelley
Serge Lutens Gris Clair. This is like standing in the French countryside surrounded by lavender and sweet herbs and smelling whiffs of frankincense coming from an ancient church up on a hill.

Linda
I have been reaching consistently for Jo Malone's Vanilla & Anise this spring. In addition to the titular notes, there are licks of saffron and orange blossom that give it some subtle va-va-voom. Its transparent sweetness is perfect for our clear, crisp weather.

Marian
Uns Fine Crafts Irian Jaya Select mimics Spring in it’s cool, vapourous topnote, midnotes of moss and herbs, it’s warm woody drydown, and surprising hints of pepper and nutmeg which add liveliness and excitement to this lovely pastoral oud from Indonesia.

Marina
Donna Karan Iris has been my go-to scent this spring. The cool rootiness of the central accord is a perfect match for the chilly spring we have been having. The green transparency of the fragrance is in tune with the fragility I feel in the air every spring...life is taking its first steps after the darkness of winter, and seems so delicate, a strong gust of wind might nip it in the bud...What I also like about Karan's new Iris is that it is not overly true to life: it is a fairly perfumey perfume, and I enjoy its easy, classical elegance.

Marla
I've been wearing Baieido Zukoh, and Shoyeido Tokusen body powders a lot this spring; not technically perfumes, they are finely ground Japanese incense spices typically worn by Buddhist monastics, very grounding and centering, and based on aloeswood, sandalwood, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and borneol camphor.

Tom
This years spring fling is Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio, with its whisper of lavender, woody citrus and slightly musky fig.

If you would like to participate in a prize draw for a set of 10 spring-y samples (Marina's choice, including some of the scents on this list), please, say so in your comment. The winner will be chosen at random and announced next week. The draw is closed.

To check other lists, please visit: Bois de Jasmin, Grain de Musc, Now Smell This and Perfume Posse.

The draw: oh yes, please!

I have been wearing Quartz an awful lot these days (but then that is my way when early spring hits town) along with Amoureuse now and again and vintage Caron Violette Precieuse, which to me IS spring. It is violets in filtered sunlight and sudden cool breezes.

I've been flirting a bit with Byredo Tulipe but, lovely as it is -- I like it quite a lot, in fact -- I'm afraid it's just a little too pretty, too young and girly-girl for me. I can never quite entirely dispense with the shiv. I need my shiv.

What a great list! It gives me a lot of scents to try I haven't considered. I'm definitely interested in the drawing!

Very interested in the prize draw! Also I am so intrigued by the body powders that Marla mentioned. I burn Japanese incense constantly at home because it reminds me of my family and it's really comforting. I've been looking for a fragrance that captures that earthy woody quality, so I'll look into those body powders for sure. Great list!

great list! - I'm still in the mood for spicy/incense-y roses, even though it is getting warmer here (have been loving my sample of Amouage Epic and maison francis kurkdjian lumiere noir)..I have to try Taif and DK Iris!

would love to be entered in the draw!

I'd love to be entered in the draw. :)

This is my first spring as a perfumista, so there's so much to try. Right now I'm loving Hermes Eau De Merveilles (but I have a feeling I will love this one even more in the hot summer weather) and Ormonde Jayne Ta'if. I usually hate rose scents, so Ta'if took me completely by surprise. I adore it!

I would love to be included in the draw. Spring fragrances are such an excellent category, so uplifting and hopeful.
I've been wearing Ta'if frequently this spring, and I'd been telling myself "this isn't really a spring fragrance, but I just don't care" so I'm really surprised and pleased to see it on this list!

I was surprised to see Gris Clair on the list. Never thought of it as a spring fragrance. Will try it out fo the day.

Right now I'm wearing Joy a lot -- I found a bottle of vintage extrait for next to nothing at a flea market, and it still smells marvelous! Hooray for spring 2010!

No need to enter me in the draw... Seconding Tom and Ines on Ninfeo Mio, quite a wonderful, original addition to the Annick Goutal collection.
Marina's choice makes me realize I haven't included any iris scent in my own selection -- iris somehow seems a natural in this season. But now that I've actually worn some of my precious Iris Gris for a gala evening, no other iris does it for me and it would seem just plain cruel to put it in a top ten considering its inaccessibility. Why, oh why does no one put out an iris-peach? It can't be that hard, though it would be costly...

Please do include me in the draw. The weather here has been so fickle that I've kept Amouage Jubilation at hand; the cool floral incense seems like a good fit with the rain and snow! of late April, upstate.

Please enter me in the draw: I find Marina's choice really interesting. Spring is a bit late this year so I've been brightening my mood with Zafferano by Gli Odori, these last few days. It works rather well! ^_^

The draw sounds sweet, inlude me in :)
Spring is the best of seasons. The life juices bubbling, everything blooming. My current fave is Tremlett's Hampstead Water, really very much a trad cologne-style perfume, bergamot, neroli, minty-freshness provided with muscle and longevity thanks to the little synthetic helpers. Way overpriced for what you get, but it was a gift after all :D, and quite as nice one.

So, Carter, I gotta ask, where's the shiv among those tender violets? Hidden down there in the mousse de saxe? (I love VP too, even in it's newer incarnation...)

Please enter me in the draw. I am feeling like I haven't found the right scent for spring yet. Green? Floral? I am bouncing around but nothing quite works yet. Thanks for the suggestions!

Ninfeo Mio will turn out to be one of the classic spring scents, I believe. I have been wearing it almost every day. The lemon tree smoke and raw boxwood are haunting. It is the exact smell of clearing brush in the spring.

One that isn't getting enough love is MMM Untitled. It is, to me, the heavier version of Ninfeo Mio. Not as complex in the drydown, but much increased in potency and mystery in the opening. I love it just as much.

For this very moment, though, as the iris comes into full bloom, the most authentic scent of the flower, Aqua di Parma Iris Nobile, is perfection itself.

Please enter me in the draw!

I've just recently gotten into the world of fragrances and I'm finding more to appreciate every day. This past Sunday I purchased my first fragrance, Chanel Gardenia Parfum and it is lovely,. My favourite this season currently is AG Mandragore. It's lemony and orange blossom-y and seems to swirl with a warmth then chill. FK APOM is also good. It's elegant and beautiful and wears like a light veil, but actually does have some substance. I'm at the perfumista point I can finally use the acronyms! Please enter me in draw...thanks to everyone else also, I have some new ideas for Spring perfume...

Many ideas for a newcomer into the world of perfumistas. Thanks for the post and comments.

Fragances I am using this spring:
Ninfeo Mio was love at first smell. One of the few bottles I own so far.
Cristalle (very recent discovery)
On cooler rainy days Bois de Violette or discontinued Feminités du Bois (this has been my loyal companion for years; still got some left which I treasure).

On hot days, already up to 30ºC,(this is spring in northern Spain) recently discovered Acqua Allegoria Pamplelune, refreshing and happy.
Chanel 19.
Private Collection.
1000 (enjoying a large sample)
Amouage Lyric Woman (sample)
Tauer's Une rose chyprée(a present)
Love them all, each at it's moment.

Will try some of the ones of your lists: while writing here trying out Ta'if.

I would love to be entered into the drawing, thank you.

I've been wearing Baudelaire by Byredo this spring. It has a lovely shifting quality. Something between a light leather and the smell of river and/or flowers. It isn't heavy or overpowering at all in the warmer weather. This perfume has been lambasted by some of the perfumes blogs I read and respect. I find that I disagree with the negative appraisals, and wonder if the negativity originates from the perfume's "sacrilegious" use of the name Baudelaire. Just my thoughts. Please enter me into the drawing.

What a generous prize! Please put my name in the hat.
Because winter is mild in my part of the world-- cool and rainy, not frozen and barren-- spring changes are subtle and not so desperately longed-for. The weather here often leaps from winter to summer in about one week, so some of your spring fragrances hardly get a moment of their own. However, I've been able to discover and enjoy Chanel No 19 this season, though local temperatures will soon rule it out. Only summer fragrances can help me get through the long hot days to come!

I'm glad to see that there is someone else who appreciates DK Iris. I really enjoy this; I find it less rooty than most irises - very easy to wear, and very pleasing.

Ta'if has been a staple this spring, but something about its initial stage (a dreaded fruitiness, actually) has recently started to bother me, so I don't think I'll go the FB route after all. Drydown is very pretty, though, so maybe I just news to get through the first few minutes.

I'm wearing Eau Première a lot, as well as MFK Lumière Noire recently. They always make me happy!

@Alyssa: I can do no better to describe the "shiv" in vintage Violette Precieuse than to quote Marina from a post she did on the scent in 2007: "Violette Précieuse was the first violet I ever loved. It demonstrated to me what I thought was impossible, that violets were not all dainty and delicate and ladylike in a boring sort of way. It was the violet with a kick, with an attitude, with a dark, brooding Caron base and I loved it. Although incredibly elegant, it was a forceful, atmospheric scent. The violet had an almost oily, rich quality and the greenness was earthy and shadowy."

Very interesting, Ta'if has actually been my spring fragrance this year. I feel that Ta'if can sometimes be too icy in the winter and so when the weather gets warmer, the warmth of the base lifts up the perfume as well, making it a bit rounder and softer at the edges. The other spring fragrance that I have been loving is Annick Goutal's Grand Amour - simply a gorgeous spring bouquet. Please enter me in the draw, thank you!

I'd love to be in your spring favorites drawing. . .

Marla, I'd love to try those powders, they sound lovely. One of my joys in my year in Japan was visiting temples, and absorbing a tiny measure of the peace therein. CdG's Kyoto brings that back for me.

I wish I could love the Ninfeo Mio. It goes all boxwoody on me, and smells like I got tagged by the local tomcat.

I too love Ta'if and Gris Clair, for very different moods. . .Today I rebelled and put on Amouage Epic Woman, and loved it. Perhaps not in 100+F summer here, but for a cool spring day, it was great. Be well.

heheh, I was just talking today about a roommate of mine in college who would wear Diorissimo. Every single time she put it on, another roommate would walk out and sniff the air and say, totally innocently, "Has the exterminator been here?" I don't think she ever caught on that it was perfume.

Please enter me in the drawing. I don't mind smelling like bug spray, if it's from Dior.

I don't know if I came late to this party, but I'd love to be entered into this draw! My goto spring scents this year are Serge Lutens' "Fleurs d'Oranger" (the smell of happy, bottled), and "Encens et Lavande" for rainy days and melancholy Sundays.
