The First Perfume I Ever Loved... & a Prize Draw

Where perfume lovers are concerned, there might be some truth to Henry Louis Mencken's statement that one always remembers the first [perfume] love with special tenderness, but after that begins to bunch them. So to celebrate Valentine's Day, we decided to put the jadedness aside and to dedicate this post to our firsts... First perfumes we ever loved. Join us and list yours for a chance to win a 50ml bottle of Park Avenue, courtesy of Bond No 9. One commenter will be chosen at random. As an aside on other loves, what was the first city you fell in love with? For me [Marina speaking here], it was New York. I have lived in various cities over the years, but with none have I felt such an immediate and strong connection.

Alyssa
My first perfume love? Do I really have to tell you? All right then. It was a half-empty bottle of Elizabeth Arden’s Sunflowers discarded by a friend who clearly had better taste than I did. Though I instantly removed the spray nozzle so I could drizzle small amounts onto my arm instead of suffering through a full spritz, I adored it. I really did. I thought it smelled like the sunflower honey I’d once tasted, and like the sun-warmed scent of the flowers themselves—that vegetal, hay-and-flowers field smell. In my memory it still does, and always will, no matter how often you say the words acquatic or nightmare to me. What can I say? It went with my Benneton sweaters.

Ashleigh
There were a few before her; Love’s Baby Soft and Jean Nate come to mind, but the first perfume that I ever loved and could truly call the one was the 1985 rose masterpiece by perfumer extraordinaire Sophia Grojsman. Maybe it was my age (let’s just say I was no longer a non-discriminating junior girl that only had access to the Walgreen’s beauty counter), maybe it was the time, but one thing is for certain; I was enamored at first inhale. Not your mother’s rose, Beautiful by Estee Lauder is a vibrant, voluptuous bouquet that has sandalwood and incense at its base making it a lush and complex head-turner. There have been many perfumes that I have outgrown, changed my mind about and simply, don’t care for anymore, but somehow, Beautiful has endured. I wear it to this day with affection and inevitably, every time I do I am stopped by curious strangers that ask, “What is that Beautiful perfume?”

I fell head over heels in love with Dior’s Diorissimo when I was 18 years old. Granted, the only reason that I even tried it was because it was rumored to be Mick Jaggers favorite and at the time he was the fervent object of my desire. I’ve never regretted it. My husband adores it and one of the best tributes that it ever got was from my son who declared to me at the tender age of 16 that if he ever met a woman who smelled of Diorissimo that he would probably be a goner. Sure enough during the greening of the spring of 2006 he met a lovely young girl who was to be his very first true love. She danced up to him at one of the local street fairs with flowers in her hair and a stem of fresh lily of the valley clasped in her hands. The wanton charm of Diorissimo is that it is all at once modern yet classic, demure yet completely and passionately sexy. Diorissimo is still my very favorite and I’m fairly sure that this always will be. No other perfume has ever been able to weave that glorious green spell that continually disarms me, bewitches me and sends me dancing with light speeds into vast whirlwinds of passionate fun!

When I think back to the days of normal perfume behavior, i.e. using one bottle until it is gone, then thinking (albeit not much) about the next, I mostly see a black hole. Nothing really comes to mind, I must have used several fragrances in those unenlightened days, but many are too atrocious to mention in a place like this. But thinking back again and again for the purpose of this post revealed one single, distinctive sphere-shaped red bottle. One scent that stands above the sea of unremarkable utility scents. Le Feu d’Issey.I loved it. It was different. The bottle alone was indicative of what was to come – something unusual. It smelled sharp, milky, spicy, flowery, musky…it has been a while, and I didn’t know how or at least didn’t attempt to describe a perfume then. Of course, as is just my luck, it is discontinued. The time was not ready for it, and neither was I. But one of these days, I will get lucky and snatch it up on eBay, to be reunited with my first love. And for the first time we will be able to talk.

Donna
My love affair with perfume started very early, with something I found in my Christmas stocking when I was no more than nine or ten years old. It was a cute little green pagoda-shaped jar of Avon Hana Gasa perfumed crème sachet. This was one of Avon's best fragrances back then, a really pretty fresh green floral with plenty of lily-of-the-valley, one of my favorite floral notes to this day. I felt so elegant and grown up when I wore it, especially since luxuries like perfume were rare in our household. Hana Gasa has been discontinued for a long time, but recently I found a full bottle of the liquid perfume online and decided to take a chance; I think I only paid about four dollars for it. To my delight it was still good, a sparkling green splash of delicate flowers in a bottle of that same shade of pale green with the pagoda cap, and I have been enjoying it as much as I did the first time. Who says you can't have your first love back again?

Kelley
My first love was L'Artisan's Incroyable. Not sure of the exact name, just Incroyable (incredible in French). It contained plum and blond tobacco. I first smelled it on my Uncle Steve and I asked him about it and got almost no information. Several months later I was at Stanley Korshak in Dallas and was chatting with a woman that had recently had foot surgery. We were talking about my search for my uncles cologne but knew almost nothing...no name, no brand...nothing. I mentioned my Uncle Steve had the exact same foot surgery. She asked if my uncle happened to be Steve Kelley (of course he is my uncle). She said she was friends with Steve and then she reached under the counter and pulled out a bottle of Incoyable and told me that she had sold Steve his bottle. Sadly, L'Artisan no longer makes Incroyable.

Linda
The first perfume I ever fell in love with must have been vintage Coty’s Emeraude – or the faint impression thereof. I was probably four or five years old and had been turned loose to play in my grandmother’s jewelry box, which seemed like a trove of impossible riches. Among the costume jewelry, souvenirs, and the few delicate gold items she kept in the jewelry box, she had a little gold-toned scent bottle with a filigree front adorned with red and transparent fake jewels – an item that seemed to have been secreted away from a mysterious harem somewhere. It was empty, but a powdery, exotic Oriental scent redolent with resins and flowers clung to its interior. I sniffed, and sniffed, and was transported. I refilled the bottle over and over with water, which, after four or five days, took on enough of the scent to scent my skin when I dabbed it on like a precious elixir. Sadly, she had no idea what fragrance had once graced it, as she had inherited the piece - so I remained haunted by its graceful ghost for years. It took me decades to identify it.

Marian
YSL’s Paris was the first perfume that stole my heart. I loved being wrapped in juicy roses and ambered violets and felt unabashedly feminine, romantic and seductive whenever I wore it. Not long ago I nostalgically sprayed some on and my daughter excitedly exclaimed “Mommy- that’s the way you used to smell when you kissed me good-night!” She looked so happy- it must have brought back memories of when our family was still “a real family” prior to my divorce. Those days are gone forever and I doubt I’ll ever remove the cap again from Paris' dusty crystal bottle. It used to be painful to know that “you can’t go back” but now, at long last I’m happy to say, I no longer want to.

Marina
Define love, right? My first perfume love could have been my mother's Madame Rochas, of which I was in awe, taken with its olfactory sophistication, the golden lace of its packaging and the fact that it was my mom's...Or it could have been Marina de Bourbon, gifted to me by someone when I was in my very late teens, which I faithfully wore and adored for many years ...But I am not sure whether my love for either was the love of perfumes themselves or more of the people associated with them. I believe The First Perfume I Ever Loved for the perfume itself was Farnesiana by Caron. I can place the moment that love happened in place and in time. I can still remember the aaah! feeling and the disbelief that such gentle, bittersweet, haunting beauty can really exist...It was a proper perfume answering to all canons but it was more than that, it was a story, it was an atmosphere. That fairy with soft eyes took my heart forever. The course of true love has never run smooth, we had our ups and downs, but Farnesiana is one fragrance I never want to be without. That is love.

Marla
The original Chanel Cristalle was my first real perfume love. I was a Southern California beach chick, like, okay? mall-hopping with my fellow Valley Girls and scoping for foxy surfer dudes, when I came across Cristalle at a Chanel counter. The SA tried in every way to dissuade the smitten teen (me) from buying a bottle, but I insisted. It was so very primeval, so green, so cold, so weird! It was as far from Love's Baby Soft, the current high school fave, as I could think of. I wore it practically every day throughout high school. I cried when they reformulated Cristalle....

Tamara
They say you never forget your first love. That is true in romance and it is equally true in the fragrance. I remember with vivid detail my first perfume love. I remember saving my wrinkled dollar bills from my steady babysitting job to purchase her. I remember learning how to say her name. I remember bravely walking into the store, setting my sites on the opulent fragrance counter that I had frequented with my aunt, and asking for her. I remember feeling so grown up in acquiring her at a mere fourteen years old. I remember exploring her white, clean packaging, studying her curves and inhaling her fragrance. Yes, I remember … Her name was Anaïs Anaïs by Cacharel. I can conjure her scent in an instant, for she accompanied me nearly every day through my sophomore year of high school. She mentored me like a loving, big sister. A little powdery, a lot floral and definitely not sophomoric, her sophistication embraced my wholesome, naïve adole-scents. Yet, her lack of overly musky or animalic bases ensured her consistent appeal to my untrained nose. Cheerful orange blossom, sweet lily and springtime hyacinth underscored by sandalwood and incense, Anaïs Anaïs’ accords are always appropriate, even for my strict, parochial school days. If only the pains of growing up were not associated with her, I would reconnect with her, asking for another warm embrace. Instead, I will always remember … with love and adoration.

Tom
The first perfume I ever loved I suppose was Joy, since it was the scent my mother wore when she and my father went out. Although I have grown to love it independently of her memory, in some way it will always make me flash on her leaning over to kiss us goodnight before heading out to a dinner party or the theater with Dad, The fist scent that I fell in love with for my personal use and the one that started me off on this journey of being a scentaholic was Diors Eau Sauvage, when I was a teen. I smelled it first at the long defunct local department store Steiger's and was blown away by it. It was so fresh and clean and bright and happy smelling. I had to have it. I saved my allowance and did odd jobs for months until I could finally get on my Raleigh and pedal over to the Hampshire Mall and make my purchase. Although my first love has been supplanted by others I still have some and still wear and love it.

Back in the '70s, I loved Chanel No. 19... I gave it to a bunch of people for birthday presents! For ones I wore, I guess I would have to say Égoïste, when it first came out. Weirdly, I don't own a single Chanel full bottle at the moment!

The first city I really fell in love with was Hong Kong. I thought about moving there for a time. When I first visited London, I liked it because it reminded me of Hong Kong!

Revlon Charlie, which would be embarrassing if my second wasn't Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth, followed closely by Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers.

Clearly, my taste prior to age 10, when I had all of these, was atrocious.

When I finally started getting into perfume as an adult, my first love was Annick Goutal Songes.

The first perfume I ever loved was Dolce Vita. I was 19. I remember just being awed when I smelled it. I had never really given much thought to perfume before -- it all smelled the same to me, and all I knew was that sometimes it gave me a headache. But this was something totally different from the powdery stuff my mom wore -- it was delicious, joyous, and so very pretty. I went through bottle after bottle. I rarely wear it anymore -- it seems too sweet for me now, but I wear Feminite du Bois a lot, which I think of as the "grownup" version. But I will always think of it fondly.

The first city I ever fell in love with was London. Alas, it didn't love me back.

I wore Red through my college years, but my true love came later when I was a single working girl in my 20s. I bought a bottle of Eau d'Hadrien and that was it for me. It's still a favorite, although I haven't tried the reformulation. I hope I don't find it as disappointing as some people have.

The first city I fell in love with was Los Angeles.

Chanel No. 5 because that was in my mother's dressing room on a mirrored oval tray along with Joy, and some other very strong Estee Lauder parfums from the 60's. L'Air du Temps, also was there.

I think I took to the Chanel No. 5 because that was what my mother wore when she went out with my dad dressed up to the country club, or to a dinner. I associated it with fashion, and a larger world, somewhere out there of international flavour.....like Paris.

Oh, gosh. Remember "Chantilly?" My beloved grandmother gave me a spray bottle and talcum powder for my 12th birthday.

In college I fell hard for "Lauren," but mostly because I wanted the full-on preppy experience.

I never loved another city besides Bucharest.

Although it wasn't my first fragrance, the first one I loved was Coty's L'Effleur. I wore it in my tweens, and through my early teens, and for me it signified that I was NOT a little girl any more. Though an inexpensive drugstore fragrance, it was, to me, a Woman's scent---and I loved it.

I have not smelled it in many years, but I think that I would like to. I can only vaguely recall it... but it was there for many "firsts," including my first real kiss.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

May very well have been Avon's To A Wild Rose, although I was always fascinated by my Mom's little black bottle of Joy. My first grown-up purchase, still in my teens, was l'Heure Bleue.

There were a lot of scents growing up that shaped what I live as an adult with a more discriminating taste...and then there were scents that I wore that I wouldn't ever again. Sunflowers was probably one of the first that I wore in JR. High that I remember loving hard. That, and the now defunct Victoria's Secret Essences de Voyage Abricot Vanille. In fact, I believe that was the first purchase I remember having to really shell some money out for. I don't count more juvenile purchases of Taboo, Navy, Exclamation, or Malibu Mist ;-) Other scents I fell for growing up that I still love but more as an adult would be my aunt Jean's Red Door and Joy, my mom's Oscar de la Renta and Opium (hated her Wind Song...), and my grandmothers' Anais-Anais, Muguet de Bois, and Brousseau's Ombré Rose.

My favorite city would be a tie between NYC and San Fran.

I didn't have much access to perfume when I was very young, except for the weekly visit from the Avon lady. She often brought samples, and the first one I remember loving was Sweet Honesty. I recall reading through the perfume descriptions in the catalog, and trying to decide which one suited me best...sort of a precursor to reading perfume reviews on blogs.

My older sister was a teenager in the early 60s. She had on her vanity table a tiny, three-sided bottle of violet perfume. There was a violet painted on the bottle but I don't remember if there was a label. I loved to slip into her room and sniff that bottle. She also had Emeraude, which I liked quite a lot. The first city I fell in love with was New York. When my sister married, she and her husband moved there. Coming from a small Western NY state town, I was always excited to visit her there and enchanted by the stores, the traffic, the rush of people of so many different descriptions.

When I was four years old I fell head over heels in love with Blue Waltz perfume. It was a "dime store" perfume and affordable even by my parents. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't get me a bottle every week when we would go shopping. Could it be because I used the entire bottle the same day I got it? Perhaps.

The first city I fell in love with was Chicago and I was fortunate enough to live there briefly.

The first perfume(s) I remember falling in love with were Rive Gauche and L'Air du Temps. I grew up in what for me was the stultifying Midwest. I was 10 when I fell madly in love with the city of San Francisco. While I've visited a number of times over the years, it was New York City that ultimately captured my heart at 18 and now I can't imagine living anywhere else.

Such fun to read through all the stories and voices...

First perfume love. Hmm. As Marina said, "first define love..." To be honest, I'd have to say that I didn't really LOVE a perfume until relatively recently, as I began my descent down the rabbit hole. In retrospect, I realize I probably had a serious relationships with KL, was infatuated with Magie Noire, but fell quietly in love with Bois Blond and L'Ombre Fauve.

That's right. Two. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: with humans, I am monogamous. But with perfume, there's room for Big Love.

My mother wore White Shoulders for years, and it was the first perfume I asked for by name. I only ever wore a drop at a time, and I never did use up the bottle. I think I loved it more for my mother's sake than for any true affinity of my own.

I threw it away when I went to college and am kicking myself now, for the new stuff is dreadful.

The first perfume I ever loved was Chanel Egoiste. I was at a local Belk's and was actually looking for something for my wife. I was frustrated because I couldn't find anything that I thought she'd really like (much later it turned out to be 31 Rue Cambon but that's another story altogether). Frustrated and a bit fatigued (a nez), I walked over to the men's counter and picked up Egoiste. I saw stars for the rest of the day! It's still one of my all time favorites. I'm a huge fan of Bond fragrances these days, too!

First perfume I ever loved is a threefold experience: drugstore brand at 17, Cachet by Prince Matchabelli (the beginning of my love for dry woods); department store brand at 24, Aromatics Elixir by Estee Lauder via Clinique; and when I could finally get my hands on it at 27, Dior's Diorella.

The first city I fell in love with when I visited my sister there at 11 and then again at 13 was Montreal. It's still wonderful.

I owned several young perfumes, Babe, Heaven's Scent, Tatiana...in my teens, but my first LOVE, my signature scent for several years in my late teens was YOUTH DEW. Heavy, I know, but Opium was big at the time and much to expensive.

I really love the city I'm from (Los Angeles). I loved San Francisco and New York when I first traveled to those places...and Prague is probably the most beautiful city (even more so than Paris) that I've been to. Amsterdam is charming and provincial. Tokyo is a swarm of people and buildings. I love them all. But Los Angeles I fall in love with every day...

I love Oak Harbor, Washington. When my husband and I moved out there for 3 months when he was in the USMC, we were too broke to have a phone or TV -- we had a radio, a tiny crappy apartment, and a car. We spent a lot of time out birdwatching and hiking in the surrounding area, and we really want to retire there. The town itself is just a little dot of a place. :) But the first city (that I can unabashedly call a "CITY") that we fell in love with was indubitably Chicago.

I was on a visit to New Orleans at the tender age of three when I caught a waft of Joy on my Aunt Chloe's wrist. I was so enthralled that she took me to her dressing table, and dabbed some on my own wrist....I have worn it ever since.

The first perfume I bought for myself was Opium, followed by Lauren, and since discovering the blogs a few years back, I have fallen madly for all the Carons and other great Old School scents, but Joy was my first love.

The first city I ever really fell in love with was New Orleans...so very different than any other city in America, I think.

Marina,

L'Effleur was a monster clean floral that, according to a basenoter is: "still more suited to a grandma than a preteen".

It came out in 1990 (when I was 10), it was was what the "older" girls (think, 13) were wearing in my little circle of friends.

The thing that most reminds me of it today is the latest Tocca fragrance, Collette, though L'Effleur was less fruity and more floral. :)

So much fun to read these!

I wore (the original) Chloe all through high school, but never loved it - what I *loved* was Emeraude: so rich and distinctive and yet light at the same time. The vintage stuff still smells wonderful, and I have quite a stash of it now.

First city I loved has to be Prague, which I visited in 1990. The second? Wellington, NZ, which I visited in 2007 and immediately wanted to make my home. (I could not convince my husband, but then, he doesn't like cities.)

No need to include me in the draw. The stories are enough of a treat. :)

As a little girl I collected perfumes and bottles...usually from my Grandmother's Avon collection. Each visit she would give me another bottle and a new scent to try. My favorite was a honeysuckle cream Sachet. I loved it!
I wish I still had that collection...which included old vintage bottles of my mothers as well.
Cristalle by Chanel was my first love as a grown up gal.

Definitely Dior Eau Sauvage was the first one I really loved, though these days I find it doesn't last long enough. I have become old and jaded, alas.

Ah, first loves. As a kid I loved Shalimar because my mom wore it (still top 5 for me), but the first scent that was all mine was No 19. I was 14, and I felt so sophisticated.

Vancouver will always be No. 1 in my heart. However, I'm having a lusty affair with Florence ;)

Although, like many, I wore Jean Nate, Muguet des Bois, and such in my early teens, the first scent I fell head over heels for was Laura Ashley No. 1. I tried it while shopping for dresses and I never looked back. It just went into my basket and whenever I got low, I replenished my supply. I never failed to get compliments whenever I wore it, which I did only for special occasions. But I invented them if I wanted to wear it. For everyday wear, in those days I used The Body Shop Cucumber or Rain. I went into scent mourning when L.A. No. 1 was discontinued.

The first perfume I can remember truly loving (of my own, not my mother's) is Guess perfume, I was probably 14 years old. From there, I went on to more ambitious outings to Guerlain and Bulgari counters at Marshall Field's, and my love for perfume only grew from there.

The first perfume I ever loved is hard to pinpoint chronologically, as it will be one of the many I have discovered and fallen hard for in the past three years. My head might say Apres L'Ondee, but my heart would say Plus Que Jamais, L'Ombre Fauve, Ta'if or L'Air du Desert Marocain.

Citywise, it's a toss up between San Diego and Berlin for me, for totally different reasons. One is gleaming and bright and by the sea, and makes you feel happy to be alive, while the other appeals to your indoor, dark and subversive side. It is all about candlelit courtyards awash with graffiti. Berlin is Germany's answer to Manhattan - it's edgy, and never sleeps...

My first perfume love was Sun Moon and Stars in the early 90's. I loved it so much, but it was strong for me (young college-aged.) I was embarrassed to wear it too often because others noticed it on me.

The first city I fell in love with was Charleston, SC. Anyone who has been there will know why...

I went to Europe with my mother back in the early 70's and bought a bottle of Diorella in the duty-free shop. Oooh, Dior! My 15 year-old self was very impressed. ;-) But surprisingly, all these years later I still like it very much.

I'd been to many cities I enjoyed and admired, but the first city I fell in love with was St. Petersburg. It amazes me that a city that has endured revolution, war, famine, and tyranny can be so incredibly, other-worldly beautiful. I'll remember standing between the two griffins on the Bank Bridge looking over the Griboyedova canal until the day I die.

3:16 PM EST
Blogger samberg said...

I grew up in NYC and will therefore always have a child's loyal love for her mother about it, so I'm going with Amsterdam. The canals reflecting geometric buildings in romantic, light-suffused ripples was captivating.

First perfume love was Beautiful, the smell of my older sister who generously bought me a bottle when I was 16. As it goes with old lovers, I often find myself unable to remember what was initially so magical about them after the relationship ends.

Growing up as a teenager we lived within walking distance of a shopping center that had a discount dept store that carried a fair amount of the popular scents from Jovan, Revelon, Fabrege, Helena Rubinstein, and Coty. I remember loving Jontu, Babe, several Sweet Earths, Chloe, and Cachet, and owning several. But it was a carded (.5 ml) perfume sample of First which I received at age 15 that made me think - this is what REAL perfume smells like! Decades and dozens (and dozens...) of bottles later, I still have a special place in my heart for First, and I still have a few drops left from that vial.

Favorite City - should have been NYC, but I wasn't old enough to appreciate it as I do now, so it has to be San Francisco - the hills, the houses and beautifully maintained gardens and window boxes, and the incomparable views of the bay, the ocean, and surrounding regions...

Hard to say what my first perfume love was - my mother didn't wear perfume much, although I recall a solid lipstick type tube of a honeysuckle perfume that I loved playing with. I'd always been a signature scent type, starting with drugstore scents (Exclamation, Samba, Aspen, Almay), then graduating to department store scents (Liz Claiborne, Happy, Escape, Sunflowers, Diamonds & Saphhies, L'eau D'Issey). Once I discovered the perfume blogs, I became aware of so much more than I could find at Macy's.

My first love was really early! Three years old. A trio of souvenir Hawaiian perfumes with plastic caps in the shape of flowers, all three housed in clear plastic, given to me by my father.

Loved the scent of Youth Dew on my mom's elderly neighbor friend, and loved taking the bus downtown to sniff around at the cosmetic counter at Dayton's. Department store fragrances were too pricey for my eleven-year-old budget, but Avon filled the void with whatever bubble bath my grandma would send me for Christmas. First fragrance I panicked over when I could no longer find it--Anne Klein II.

oh my...what a lovely question! my first awareness of a perfume was the White Linen my mom wore in the eighties but the first bottle i bought for myself was Magie Noire...quickly followed by Maroc.they both smelled of what my teenage self wished to be- exotic, gypsyish and desired by Keith Richards.while i was certainly d)none of the above, these magical elixirs allowed me to dream.
the first city i loved was the first real city i ever visited- nyc on a senior class trip. we saw Zorba the Greek on Broadway, visited Sax 5th Ave. and the whole 17 year old lot of us was served beer with dinner. we each stole our pilsner glass on the way out- how mature! did it all under a cloud of Maroc to be sure!

I am late to the game too, but here goes: first perfume love. Somehow I was passed down a bottle of Diorissimo when I was quite young. An elder female relative must have received it. I was fascinated by the houndstooth pattern and can still remember the way the cap screwed onto the bottle. (Still haven't held a "vintage" bottle in my hands since then!) As for cities, I didn't fall for NY for years, though it was the place I spent the most time in. So it would probably have to be Paris, which I didn't get to until my 20s. There are now many others! Must get there again soon!
