My Favorite Japanese Perfumes (And a Perfumista Way to Help Japan)
by Marla While watching the horrendous footage of the tragedy currently unfolding in Japan, I realized how much of my love of perfumery stems from Japanese perfume. Kenzo, Miyake, Hanae Mori, Shoyeido, even Serge Lutens (a child of Shiseido) are all integral to my perfume collection and love of perfume in general. So today, I thought I’d take another look at my favorite Japanese perfumes, and give perfumistas around the globe a chance to help Japan. Shiseido began marketing its products to the west in the 1960s, and perfume history was made when they appointed Serge Lutens their international image creator in 1980. My favorite Shiseido is, of course, Feminite du Bois, an ode to cedarwood, but I have yet to try a Serge Lutens I do not want to wear, at least once in a while! Shiseido makes too many perfumes to recount here, but most are available only in Japan. They have some exquisite florals, like Vocalise and Murasaki, and my favorite for men, the spicy and intense Basala. And their original, aldehydic chypre, Zen, is a long-standing cult favorite in the west. Kenzo Takada was born in 1939. He didn’t speak French, but he moved to France after he graduated university, and made his name in the 1970s. His wild, colorful clothes with Asian motifs fit the European 70s perfectly, and his first perfume was the infamous banana scent, King Kong, which has, perhaps mercifully, disappeared from the shelves. Yet we all know Flower, Amour, and their many interesting flankers. I’ve worn both for years now, and have worked my way through several of the flankers as well. Haute couture designer Hanae Mori was born in 1926. She became famous for incorporating traditional Japanese motifs and textiles in her line, which debuted in 1955. With a $500-million fashion empire, she’s the only Japanese member of France’s haute couture syndicate, and she designed the wedding gown of Japan’s Princess Masako. Magical Moon has been my HG since it appeared several years ago. I own it in every concentration, and have backup bottles of them all! Scary, but I think it’s that good. My husband’s first cologne was Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey, and the original, conical bottle is one of the best perfume bottles designed, ever. And for when I don’t want to wear perfume, I go to my Shoyeido and Baieido incense powders, finely ground medicinal-grade herbs, spices, and woods that are rubbed into the skin. The use of these powders probably began in India for health purposes and to aid meditation; as Buddhism spread, so did the powders. I use them for yoga and running to give me a mental and emotional boost. Now for how you, fellow perfumista, can help Japan. Please leave a comment about your favorite Japanese perfume or incense. I'll donate one dollar fore every comment, up to $500, to the Red Cross Japan Fund, during the month of March. I thank you in advance for your comments! Labels: Marla |

What a beautifull idea!!!
Well, I am not so aware in japanese perfumes but I love L'Eau Issey Miyake <3
It's a classic, and thank you for being the first to comment!
-Marla
That is a beautiful thought and initiative.
The only green floral fragrance that I have ever truly loved is the sadly discontinued 'relaxing fragrance'. A true summer love.
My thoughts are with my japanese friends.
You are amazing. This is a great idea. I hope many of us copy it.
I love the old Kenzos....Ca sent beau and Parfum d'ete. I also love anything attempting a Japanese Cherry Blossom....even the BBW ones.
Asali, I remember that "relaxing fragrance"- the one by Shiseido in the green bottle? They used to sell it here in Germany, but I haven't seen it for awhile. It was lovely.
-Marla
Thanks, Bryan, I had Ca Sent Beau, it was beautiful, I gave it to a good friend who wore it better than I did!
-Marla
That's right; green frosted glass bottle :-)
What a wonderful and positive post! Kenzo Amour is one of my comfort fragrances. It feels like a warm blanket to me, very cozy and safe. Love D'ete too. Also my obachan burns this blue sandalwood incense every day and it's so soothing. They use it at her temple too. Sometimes I want a similar perfume, but then I kind of like associating it with specific spaces and not holding it with me everywhere.
My favourite Japanese inspired perfume is Citta de Kyoto by SMN.
Step, I find Amour very comforting as well. I liked Holi, but then went back to the original. My favorite sandalwood is Fu-In Sandalwood by Minorien. Gautami, I've never been able to find Citta de Kyoto, but I'll keep looking!
-Marla
What a wonderful idea! L'eau d'Issay was one of my first perfumes. It a bit fresh for me now, but it certainly is distinctive. There are a few Kenzos I like, Ete and L'eau I believe, but don't have bottles of those. I do need to try the Magical Moon - I've heard quite a bit about that.
It's quite unique, I call it a fruity floral for grownups, with a lot of incense!
-Marla
My favorite Japanese scent is kyara incense. It is warm, mellow and complex.
I haven't ventured into Japanese scents yet - but thank you for doing this!
Thank you for doing this, Marla! A beautiful idea.
My favorite japanese perfume was Le Feu d'Issey by Issey Miyake, sadly discontinued.
Excellent idea. When I think of Japanese fragrances, I think of my Japanese grandmother's dresser table. She wore Kenzo (Ete), and Chanel No 5. Then there were the scents of her house - joss sticks, ornate tins of tea, pungent pickles, and the family collection of decorative dolls scented with Japanese musk.
I'll join those who cheer for Ca Sent Beau...what a beautiful fragrance.
Since Rei Kawakubo founded Commes des Garcons, I'll mention them as well: I'm nuts about Tar from the Synthetic Series!
dear Marla - what a wonderful idea, you're doing a great thing. L'eau d'Issey Eau Relaxante have been in my fragrance wardrobe for years, i'm sad that it's discontinued and try to keep some because i have some wonderful memories that it reminds me of... Another love of mine was Kenzo l'Homme.
A great idea. Bully for you!
I too am a fan of Shisedo's range with Uncle Serge ad own several bottles. A favourite from them would be hard to choose. Chergui maybe? But then there's Borneo 1834 in all its strangeness. Too much good stuff to choose from!
Kenzo is another beloved. I liked Amour but adore Amour le Parfum, with its increased spiciness. For me, it takes the vanilla rice pudding comfort up a notch to become something really interesting and very wearable as well.
I did buy myself a bottle of Flower, but I rarely wear it. Oddly, I find it too strong. (And this from a woman who cheerfully splashes on the Ambre Sultan?)
What a wonderful idea! Thank you. Way back in the 80s, I wore Zen, and I'm quite fond of Shiseido's White Rose. I may need to try some more from the Shiseido line.
I love Flower by Kenzo as well as Hanae Mori Butterfly. Lovely idea!
That's a lovely idea, Marla!
If Serge Lutens counts- most of my favorite perfumes are SLs (Tubereuse Criminelle might be my favoritest)
I remember loving the Japanese inspired CDG Kyoto..
Zen, Inoui, & Murisaki originals from Shisedo, plus Kenzo`s Parfum d`Ete and signature floral in their original formulations. Great Idea!!!
My favorite Japanese perfume has to be Shiseido FdB.
Others: I love the Comme des Garcons Incense series, in particular Avignon and Comme des Garcons Odeur 53. I also love Eau d'Issey.
What a lovely and generous idea -- thank you so much for doing this.
what a great idea!
Has anyone every tried incense from Japan? It is supposed to be quite beautiful although possibly it's for religious purposes.
I am a huge devotee of Shiseido, their cosmetic and skincare line and especially their perfumes.
Thank you for your generosity! This is a wonderful thing you are doing.
What a wonderful idea. My favorite Japanese scent is L'eau de Kasaneka, a prayer of a scent.
I love most of Kenzo perfumes especially the Amour lines. You're doing a great think keep it up. My thoughts are with them, hope things will be better for them soon.
Kenzo Ca Sent Beau tops my list. And what a wonderful idea on your part--thanks for inspiring us all.
Wonderful idea. I want to help too.
My favorite japanese perfume is Kenzo Amour le Parfum.
My prayers are for Japan.
Lovely, Marla. Was just having an exchange with the author of the flavor/frag blog Glass, Petal, Smoke about how many perfumes owe their inspiration to Japan, and how lovely it would be if someone donated profits from say, BBW Cherry Blossom, to the relief efforts. In the meantime this is a great idea, and I'm off to match your dollar and then some...
My favorite by far is Shiseido Feminite du Bois. This is a great idea, thanks so much for putting it into action! xo
I like Hanae Mori in the butterfly bottle as well as Magical Moon.
Thanks for doing this, Marla.
Until I read this I had never thought of my perfumes by nationality, although it seems obvious, to me they were not categorized this way. However, my life would not be as beautiful or as fragrant without Kenzo, Issey Miyake, Hanae Morae and Shisedo.
I love the Annayake perfumes, especially Hamani. Thanks for this posting!
SMY
Kenzos and Shiseidos...waiting to hear from more friends in Japan that they are OK....
A Message from Orchids, for me (the orange one).
What a wonderful idea, Marla!
Thank you Marla; this post is a wonderful & positive idea.
I love Kenzo Jungle l'Elephant - it's in my personal top 10. And the Comme des Garcons incense series is wonderful.
What a beautiful soul to do such a beautiful thing!
My favorite Japanese perfumes are the Comme des Garcons Incense series and the Red series, especially Carnation.
Do you have any good recs for Japanese incense to burn, or can you burn the ones you wear, also?
I went to a memorial service last year for a Japanese co-worker, and they had the most incredible powder incense there; haven't been able to find it, though I've enjoyed the search.
What a great idea! Mine has to be the lovely original Murasaki by Shiseido, I really would like to have that back again.
Shiseido Hanatsubaki Euthrixine all the way. Love the lightness of most true Japanese fragrances. These fragrances softly caress you...they do not weigh you down. Graceful and ever so beautiful.
Marla, thank you for doing something so wonderful and kind.
I must admit that back in the mid to late nineties, I loved L'Eau d"Issey! I could not get enough of it.
Hugs and love!
What a generous offer Marla. Great post.
Wonderful comments, everyone! I went through a bottle of L'Eau de Kasaneka a few years back, a gorgeous herbal rose. And how could I forget Jungle L'Elephant and Tigre? For those interested in Japanese incense, please head over to the blog, Olfactory Rescue Service, they'll tell you everything you want to know, and much more!
-Marla
This is a beautiful offer Marla and thank you! My favorite was the original Shiseido in the black bottle with the gold etching.....absolutely beautiful!
my favorite would have to be the original feminite du bois via shiseido.
runner up: orignal zen.
(i am contemplating getting some kenzo rice steam water -- and have a feeling i will love that, too.)
harper
I made my donation to the Red Cross today, and I am glad my comment will help through you as well! I enjoy my bottle of Keiko Mecheri's Bois de Santal.
To me, the original Zen is that perfect little black dress perfume, excellent for evening parties that are on the formal side. The second Zen (pearl) is my favorite- it's full of kyara incense, and very soft and meditative. Impossible to find now, though, so I'm hoarding my bottle!
-Marla
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for putting feelings into action and helping us all use beauty to remind us to do the same.
I love Comme des Garcons Incense and Red series, especially Rose.
Thank you for the heart and caring and inspiration.
This is a lovely tribute - I too am a fan of Feminite du Bois. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks, Marla, for a generous gesture. I love Kenzo Summer,..not for the faint of heart, but I think it shimmers.
All this suffering should end...and it is because of people like you that good triumphs!!!
Japanese scents...all of the above and the white organic shaped bottle of zen!
Ah, hongkongmom, you are with me on the white Zen, it's so good, isn't it?
Best,
Marla
What a lovely and generous gesture! A bunch of perfumista buddies and I are wearing Japanese or Japanese inspired scents today as a collective prayer. My choice is CdG Kyoto. Thank you for doing this Marla!
So far, I've been able to donate $50 because of all your wonderful comments!
-Marla
I love Kenzo Summer because it does remind me of the smells of summertime at the beach. I had forgotten about Magical Moon, so I pulled out my sample. It is wonderful! I might need a full bottle.
Thank you for your donation.
My favorite Japanese incenses are Baiedo's Green Kyara
and Kyara Kohkoh.
For scents I enjoy Commes des Garcons Hinoki.
How generous and thoughtful of you, Marla. Thank you! You've inspired me to make a donation, too.
Thank you. My favorite incense in the universe is Hakubai Lotus by Nippon Kodo, a long standing favorite. It's not widely available in US. Also love FdB, the Zen (2000) in white bottle, Message from Orchids Nioi Ebine, and just about anything sakura scent, currently enjoying Shiseido and Kanebo's version. God Bless Japan
Beautiful idea. I find myself in tears watching the devastation. As one commenter on CNN said, 'we all are Japan'-- this resonated with me.
CdG Kyoto is one of my favorites.
Great idea! I haven't explored Japanese fragrances but would like to sample the offerings by Annayake at some point. I would love to find a scent that evoked delicate floweres, stones, and wood!
I really enjoy A Scent by Issey Miyake as well as A Scent Florale... looking forward to trying the orange blossom one this spring.
Of course I have to mention Shiseido's outstanding makeup and skincare as well. Love the products in The Skincare line. I use their powdery foundation daily. And their lipglosses and lipsticks are superb as well. I am itching to try some of their new spring eyeshadow colors.
great idea!
What a wonderful and generous gesture!
Kenzo has several both my son and I like but our favorite is Kenzo Air. It reminds him of 2 trips to the northern New Mexico mountains so takes him back to those hiking excursions.
What a beautiful offer! I love and get a lot of comfort from wearing Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum.
Your generous offer is inspiring! I love kenzo and Miyake scents, but have not tried many Hanae Mori scents at all - I'll have to remedy that. As we did for New Orleans after Katrina, we'll need to support Japanese businesses in order to help their recovery.
Fabu and generous idea!!! I have 2 Japanese fragrances -- L'eau par Kenzo and L'eau D'Issey by Issey Miyake. Depends on my mood, but since spring is almost here on the East Coast, the Kenzo is my favorite today.
What a wonderful and kind thing for you to do! Thank you for doing this :-)
I own a bottle of the original Zen, but the newer formulation works better on me. I know, I know, that's crazy talk coming from a perfumista! It's the truth, though :-)
I adore so many Kenzos: Summer, Power, Tokyo, Parfum d'Ete, they're just so good and easy to wear.
Kenzo Parfum d'Ete, the old one with lots of lily of the valley under the greenery. (The new one is wonderful too, but I don't own any.) Lovely stuff, though it doesn't smell very "Japanese" to me.
I do have a soft spot for Murasaki.
What a kind and generous thing to do, by the way.
Keiko Mecheri - one of my favorites
What a wonderful thoughtful idea! Kenzo Flower was one of my first perfume buys, FB, and I love it in the spring.
The first perfume I fell in love with was A Scent by Issei Miyake.
You are wonderful!
My favorite is Hanae Mori Butterfly, but I also enjoy the Kenzo scents and Feminite du Bois.
Happy to post a comment for a good cause!
What a generous idea!
One of my favorite Japanese perfumes is Murasaki. I have a small bottle of the original scent, which I love wearing.
what a simple lovely idea, good for you, Marla. My favorite Japanese perfume is also by Shiseido, called Zen. I loved the bottle!
Janelc
Kenzo Power is calming, important in these times. Thank you for doing this...
$25 more the the Japan Fund, $75 in all! And thanks to all of you who contacted me privately to match funds, that is wonderful!
-Marla
I don't know if the Thymes Kimono Rose counts, but I really enjoy that one.
Kenzos D'ete is my perfect scent for summer.
Not for wearing but I really love the scent of japanese incense that I get from a local buddhist temple here in Sweden.
Thank You for the opportunity to participate here.
Mat; by Masaki Matsushima is my favorite Japanese perfume.
It has to be L'Eau D'Issey - my Paris based sister in law was wearing it when I first met mher in 1997...Wore it for years and loved it.
Thank you for doing this!
I really like a lot of Kenzo's scents, but I was surprised by his Tokyo fragrance - it's not something I expected to like, but I loved it!
There are also a ton of Japanese inspired fragrances that I like. From CDG Kyoto and Hinoki to Hermes Iris Ukiyoe, and CBIHP's Just Breathe and Diptyque's Oyedo!
Today I am wearing Citta di Kyoto. I hope these comments keep coming in! Thank you for doing this, Marla.
Yohji Homme!
I'm not a big fan of Japanese fumes, but I will try some of the ones you mentioned :)
I rarely comment on blogs but I had to for this post - kudos to you, this is a great donation idea!!
I love FdB and nearly all the Serge fragrances. What a wonderful way to donate...prayers for those dealing with this awful tragedy.
What a lovely idea, thank you for doing this.
Kenzo Amour is one of my favorite perfumes, but perhaps it's not really Japanese since Kenzo's now owned by the rather un-Japanese LVMH. For a real Japanese company I'd say the first 2 Zens from Shiseido are my favorites. I love Mitsouko and Aftelier Shiso for a Japanese-inspired scent.
Thank you for doing this post. Any of the Japan inspired scents from CdG. Notes includes japanese woods, incense, food
Yohji Homme and Kenzo Air, I'd forgotten those two wonders!
-Marla
You are fantastic for doing this. It is a pleasure to read our blog.
I didn't realise that Commes des Garcons was a Japanese brand! I adore their Incense Avignon. I'm a huge fan of the Lutens/Shiseido range, and really like several Kenzos - especially Jungle L'Elephant. Thank you for doing this!
This is such a wonderful idea. =)
I really enjoyed reading a little history behind these houses. I had no idea. =)
I absolutely LOVE zen! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find it for a while so I guard my flanker like a dragon hoarding gold treasure.
A perfume that is very closely linked to the early days of courting between my husband and me and which apparently, when he smells it, still brings back some very fond memories is L'Eau d'Issey. I have been wearing this fragrance on and off ever since it came on the market and it does not cease to please =). Thank you Marla for doing such a wonderful thing for Japan! Greetings from Australia.
Absolutely Feminite du Bois, both the original and the Serge Lutens version. You didn't mention one other perfume I adore: Kenzo Jungle Elephant. Thank you for this generous idea.
Jungle L'Elephant and Tigre are both in my collection. I know L'Elephant is very popular in Brazil, seems like a good match, it's unique and vivid!
-Marla
What a great idea! My favorite would be Kenzo the flower! Thank you!
I don't have any Japanese perfumes, but I'm a big fan of Japanese incense. Current favorite: Baieido Excellent Syukokoku.
Thanks so much for doing this, Marla!
We made it to 100 comments! Excellent work, people!!
-Marla
Great idea! I tried Japanese incense powders this year and am hoarding my tiny bottles of vintage Zen. Thank you, nozknoz
The Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey flanker with green leaves on the bottle was my favorite of its flankers so far... And now I want me Magical Moon :)
I love Shisheido's Feminite du Bois - it is one of my most cherished perfumes. And I do have to say that I am a fan of Kenzo's Amour. I haven't worn either of them nearly enough lately, which I will remedy as soon as I finish this comment...
Thank you for reminding us of exquisite Japanese scent creations, and for using your blog to support the Red Cross in this way. A very generous and beautiful idea!
What a kind and generous thing to do. Good for you.
Sondra
Great idea! I think I just discovered my fave Japanese perfume.. my DH gifted me with a lil decant of Shiseido White Rose and I adore it.
This is a really nice initiative, thank you!
I loved Murasaki, until no longer able to get it in Canada
