Kiehl's Original Musk

By Tom

Every so often someone on one of the boards at MUA or Basenotes will as the question "Is Kiehl's a substitute for Muscs Kublai Khan?"

The short answer is "no", but that's also doing a disservice to Kiehl's. Although it was created years before, it's more of a "Princess Bride" of a musk, with the flowers at the fore and the musk more winking and far less dark than Mongol menace of the Lutens. Kiehl's Original Musk is almost impossibly cozy, with roses, lily and ylang-ylang and powder and just a hint of dirtyness in the patchouli musk finish.

Comparisons aside, Original Musk is a pretty scent, easy to wear and easy to love. It's also easy to get, at $39.50 wherever Kiehl's is sold, along with shower gel and lotion at $15.50 and $19.50 respectively.

Yumm...I actually love this stuff and it does love me back:) I keep the little roller thingy with me at all times for moments when I want just a little extra Bam!

A staple in my collection. I use Kiehl's as my all purpose musk for layering; it adds a little depth to all kinds of scents.

I much prefer the "Original" in the oil formulation (have only seen that in the small rollerball). It's far deeper, nastier, and long-lasting than the edt spray. Not a flowery number at all on my skin.

Louise mentions deep and nasty, and I must say that is my experience of this stuff. I have been so puzzled for so long at other people's experiences and descriptions... Is it possible to be hypernosmic to a musk instead of anosmic? (Is that even a word? It should be, don't you think?)

Alyssa-

I think anythings possible; I know that I tend to neuter musk scents.

this is always one of my staples! it is soft and subtle and doesn't scream "Perfume"

I love layering this w/ their vanilla - perfect comfort scent. Am really curious about the Chinese Flower scent they've rereleased now. Am thinking it might also layer really well w/ their musk.

It is a nice staple, and it's so nice to have something so nice at an affordable price!

I almost went to Nordstrom last weekend to sample this and, if I liked it, I intended to buy the roller-ball thingy (I also want to try the Coriander). Now I really have to try it.

Louise & Alyssa say the rollerball is skanky; that might be good. I'm starting to appreciate musk since falling in love a couple months ago with Musc Ravageur.

I wish I love it, I want to love it, but alas, it doesn't love me and I won't betray myself.....

Joe-

I think you will enjoy this, especially at $25 for the roller thing. I really liked the Coriander one as well.

Sorry to read that- it's the way things go sometimes, yes?

It is the way things go and thankfully so otherwise we'd all be the same and that would be boring :-)

I need to try this again sometime - I always thought it was much too sweet for me, was that my imagination?

Running late on reading as always these days but had to pipe up. I'm anosmic to many musks but not this. No, this I can smell. And on me it smells like cat pee. So not good. But you tell truth about the cuddly because that's where it goes on my good friend B. On me? Pee.

I've got an older bottle of the oil, a little brown bottle with black and gold label. It's not flowery on me, not skanky by any means, but I don't get the flowers.

It's sweet, but I think it's not too much. But then again I like Rahat Loukoum, which others (cough- March) find to be toothache inducing

I think the flowers show up a lot more in the EDT. Now I really must try the roll-on!

Hypernosmic works for me, Alyssa...cuz I AM when it comes to musk. I amp it to the extreme, and it stays with me for days. This osunds so lovely but I am sure my skin will ruin it!

If there's a store in your area that carries it, it's worth a test!

A surprisingly good musk, both the edt and the oil. Musky with animalic undertones, made with good materials. Underrated and under appreciated.

faizanjax-

I agree. I think too many want to compare it to others when it should be judged on it's own merits. On all levels, it's a marvelous scent.
